Styrofoam and Mortar
(Focus Material)
The box is one of my first pieces and the structure that I created for a mosaic piece in progress.
I built the snake out of a styrofoam wreath and Easter egg. I cut them and rejoined them with mortar. The Mosaic is not done, but I love how the structure came out.
For Mosaics, we create sculptural forms using styrofoam. It is a perfect base because it keeps its shape and it is lightweight, balancing the heavy mortar. We have to purchase some of it, but we can get a lot by using leftover packaging.
We draw out the shapes that we want for our final piece. Then we cut everything out using a heated wire cutter. This allows us to get clean cuts and smooth edges because it melts the styrofoam as we cut.
All pieces need to be joined with toothpicks and mortar. We add a layer of cheesecloth to add stability to the structure, then more mortar. After that, it is ready for tiles and glass!
In my architecture class, we built models using balsa wood. This is a ¾” = 1’ model of the framing of a door wall. First I made a drawing and then I used a miniature saw to cut the balsa wood. It is held together with wood glue. Balsa wood is really good for creating scale models because it is easy to cut and comes in a variety of sizes. For some projects, it is a little too flexible.
I use cardstock for many things. It is inexpensive, easy to work with, and comes a lot of different colors. It is a great material to use for three dimensional shapes and architectural models.
