Love(ly) Hat
This is a hat that I made out of cardboard. I used a tape measure, a meter stick, a square ruler, a box cutter, and a circle cutter to create it!
I measured my head with a tape measure. My first attempt was too small and I learned to make it 10cm. bigger than my head!
I used a meter stick to measure the length I needed and the height that I wanted for my hat.
I cut out the rectangle and added scoring lines every cm. I used a square ruler to make sure my lines were all at 90° angles.
I scored the cardboard so that I could create a rounded shape that would look neat.
Since I know that the length of the rectangle is the circumference of the circle I need for the top, I divided my length by pi (3.14) to get the the diameter and then in half to get the radius of the circle.
I used a ruler to set my compass to the right length.
Then I used the compass to draw the circle for the top of the hat and a larger circle around that for the brim.
I used the circle cutter to cut out the brim and the top.
Once it was cut out, I used tape to attach the brim to the rectangle.
Then I used hot glue to attach the top.
Finally, I cut out a heart and used a square ruler to cut out a 90° angle so that it would perch on top.
My "Other Tool"
When I first saw circle cutters online, I knew that I wanted one because every time I tried to cut out a circle, I was unhappy with my results. When I opened the box I was really confused because it came in several pieces and the instructions were . . . not good! After looking at pictures, I figured out how to assemble it. The promotional videos on the website made them seem so easy to use, but my first several attempts ended in failure with either nothing being cut out or something that bore little or no resemblance to a circle. I did some research and finally found a video online that really helped. I learned that the point needed to barely reach through the cardboard and how to get the blade at just the right place. I also discovered that it really helped to either tape down the cardboard or have someone hold it for me. After a few more tries, I have learned to cut out some really nice circles. Now that I can do it well, I have found many reasons to get cutting!
