Rulers are great for measuring distances and drawing straight lines. Metal rulers can also be used for getting straight lines with box cutters. Long rulers are usually either yardsticks (36 inches) or metersticks (100 cm).
Tape Measures
There are two main types of tape measures. Cloth or plastic ones are used to measure irregular or rounded shapes. (They are perfect for body measurements.) Metal tape measures are used for measuring things like walls or lumber.
Meters or Feet???
In the United States, most people (except scientists) use British Imperial System which includes inches, feet, yards and miles. Most other places (Including Brittan) use the Metric System which includes centimeters, meters and kilometers. You can use either one, though most people find the metric system easier.
