In English class one of my strengths I showed is reading and understanding the meaning of the words. It is a good strength because it’s very helpful to understanding my reading and being able to learn what the book is about. One challenge I faced is writing not being good enough and sometimes pulling down my overall score. An assignment that stands out to me is the semester project where we worked with our classmates and made a PSA video about gender inequality.
In reading, my level is good because I am able to understand what I’m reading and I’m able to learn the meaning of different words and context of the story. This can also help me use these vocabularies onto my writing which can also increase my skill in writing. For speaking, I think I’m pretty good at it even though it might make me chat with some of my friends. My goal for ENG3U this semester is to also improve my writing skills and get a higher grade. I will focus on using more difficult vocabulary and different writing strategies to help with my grade.
In these first few weeks of class, I have done a some assignments like the reading tracker, a writing and more. For the writing, we had to choose a local issue we wanted to solve. I communicated my message through doing a writing about informing the people about this problem. My local issue I chose for my writing is Land pollution. The goal was to spread awareness about how land pollution is affecting everyone and not only animals. I chose a explainer article because I was informing about this topic to the audience.
My issue is land pollution and it deserves more public attention because it also it linked to ocean pollution. It's a large global issue and it's sometimes ignored because people think it won't affect them and they think their convenience is important so they use plastic and throw it all over the place without thinking about the consequences. I try to raise awareness by giving examples and the consequences of throwing trash on to the streets and not into the trash cans.
The intended audience for this writing in every person in the world. A choice I made is to add different examples on what will happen if trash gets blown into the ocean, bigger problems will happen. My writing is trying to encourage action on using less plastic and stop throwing trash on the streets, especially un recyclable materials.
Unit 1 Classwork
We did a tracker every week for the book Fahrenheit 451. We did this to understand more about what was happening in the part of the book.
Unit 2 Classwork
We talked about media in Unit 2. We started off by learning about how different types of media and use of words can affect the audience and attract different audience to reading it. Our first topic was talking about if Taiwan should or should not reactivate nuclear energy.
Unit 2 Final Project
The event I chose is collecting carbon fees in May and I want to tell people that this is what's happening right now. The three media forms I chose are short form video, web article and IG post. I chose these because it attracts people the most. The target audience is mostly organizations that are eco friendly and companies. Some of my messages changed because I need to use a different type of form like the web article to the video. The most difficult project was the video because of the editing and you have to have good timing to the voice. This helped me understand more about the media and the way it shaped people's understanding. Your word choice can influence people and also affect them when not used correctly.
Unit 3
Unit 3 helped me understand censorship more by using real life examples like the white terror. My understanding of Fahrenheit 451 changed because I learned that people actually will do this just for their own good. Some connections that could be made is that Fahrenheit 451 was censoring books, Taiwan also censored books during the white terror period. I learned that they will block everything that can spread information against them to keep the people in place. The role fear plays is keeping the people quiet and making them afraid of getting killed. The unit 3 task that got me thinking the most dep is the final project because I needed to research about a event. My final project showed my understanding because I knew how these event are going and how people stopped it. One warning that still matters is that we need to stand up to unfairness the goverment give us.
The thing that I am most proud of is finishing the Fahrenheit tracker. The project best shows my growth because it helps me focus on my reading to answer the questions. My skills improved because I can do better projects. My ability to explain ideas with evidence improved because I learned how to research more evidence meaning I have more evidence to use. I learned about that media can control someone and make them believe something easily. My work habits changed by starting with always doing the work on the last day to starting to give each day some work time and not rush it. Something that was challenging for me is making media projects because you have to change everything to it's format, so you have to change how you make it. One skill I want to improve is my writing. Even though I has improved I think I can improve more. My GSP showed my learning because I wrote everything on it. I want the reader to learn that we did a lot of projects through out the semester.
