Week 1 SDG Collage
In this project, my groupmates and I created a college based on SDG 13: Climate Action. We combined different pictures, like nature, pollution, and people, to show the impact of environmental issues. I learned how to combine images and use contrast and different art principles to show the impact and make my idea clear.
Week 2 Curreny Design
For this project, we redesigned a 1000 dollar bill, but at the same time, we were also working on the local injustice project, so we didn't have enough time to really focus on the currency design. Because of this, our work was done a bit roughly and not as detailed as we expected. Even though it was rushed, I still learned about layout, balance, and how design can represent culture and meaning. If I have more time, I would improve the details and make the design more complete.
Week 3 Mood Board
For this project, our group name was Save the Trees. Our theme was based on SDG 15: Life on Land. We included images of forests, animals, and pollution to show the importance of protecting nature. We didn't do very well because we couldn't organize our ideas, and because of that, our mood board looked quite simple. From this project, I learned that having more ideas on planning is important; if I could improve, I would add more details and make it more creative.
Week 4 Project Pitches v1
For this project, our group worked on our project pitch 1 for SDG 15: Life on land. I spent a lot of time preparing before the day of the presentation, but since I had a stomachache, I was not in the classroom, so I missed the presentation. After the presentation, I heard that it was not really good. We were missing a lot of information on the slides, and our ideas were not clear. We were also confused about what we should focus on. Our target was to help people in Taiwan, but the issue we chose was not very clear, and don't know which group of people needed to be helped. Because of this, we realized we needed to improve our idea or change another SDG.
Week 5 Project Pitches v2
For the second version, we changed our SDG to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. We decided to focus on housing inequality in Taiwan. Our goal was to help the lower-income families because housing prices in Taiwan are very high, making it hard for the lower-income families to afford housing. We improved our project by making our idea clearer and more realistic. Our presentation was much better and more organized, and we explained our issue more clearly. However, during the presentation, I forgot part of what I wanted to say and got stuck. This was my mistake, and I need to prepare more for the presentation next time. v dc
Week 6 Logo Design
In this project, I drew several sketches for our team logo. In the first two drafts, my sketches didn't connect to our group project at all, so I tried different ideas and designs before choosing the final one. This helped me understand how to draw a good logo by looking at the principles of art. I learned that sketching is important before making the final design.
Week 7 Brand Kit
For this project, the brand kit was mostly my teammate’s responsibility. They worked on choosing the font, color, and style for our project. Even though I was not the main person in charge, I still collaborated a little with my groupmate and understood how a brand kit helps make a project look more organized. It shows me how important teamwork is, and how each person has a different role in the project, and how each person can help the group.
Reflection on Growth:
Project Improve: One project I could improve is my Week 3 Mood Board. Our mood board looked quite simple because we didn't have enough ideas. If I could improve it, I would spend more time on brainstorming and adding details to make it more creative and meaningful.
Feedback: For my project pitch, our teacher gave feedback that our idea was not clear, we didn't include enough information, and we did not explain our target. Because of this feedback, we changed our topic from SDG 15 to SDG 10 and focused on housing inequality. We also added more details and explained our ideas more clearly in project pitch 2.
Connection: Our mood board connects to science class because we learned about ecosystems, and human activities affect the environment. This helped me understand why protecting forests is important, and it also gave me ideas for the mood board.
Comparison: Compared to my past work, I have improved my design skills and organized my ideas. Before, I didn't really focus on layout, but now I try to make my work clearer and more organized. Compared to my earlier work, such as the week 1 SDG collage, I have improved in organizing my ideas and using design elements more clearly. My recent work like logo design, is a good example of better layout and clearer meaning.
Self-improve: One thing I need to improve is my presentation skills. Sometimes I forget what to say or get stuck. I will practice and run through the whole presentation once before presenting, and prepare short notes to remind me during the presentation.
Social Justice Investigation:
My group is focusing on housing inequality, SDG 10: Reduce Inequality. This issue affects lower-income families in Taiwan, because the housing prices are very high and many people are not able to afford housing. This problem is local because in Taiwan, housing prices are increasing, and it is becoming harder for people with lower-income families to live. Our goal is to raise awareness about this issue and try to help make housing more affordable. For example, many young people and lower income families in Taiwan can't afford a house, making them need to live with their families longer since prices are too high.
Graphic Design Growth:
At the beginning of the semester, I thought Graphic Design was just using principles of art to make things look nice, but after these seven weeks, I understand that graphic design is about communicating ideas clearly. It serves a meaning and purpose, not just about appearance. The most important thing I learned is how to use layout, color, or images to show a message. This helped me improve my projects and make my ideas clearer.
Week 8 - Final Logo file
For this project, we finished our group logo for the housing inequality project. Before making the final logo, we drew a lot of different logo ideas and talk about which one fit our topic the best. I gave some ideas on how to improve the design, and Josephine mainly responsible for drawing the final logo. This project helped me understand that a logo should be simple but can represent the project.
Week 9 - Magazine draft 1
For this project, we worked on magazine draft 1. My responsibility was contacting the community partner. I spent time sending emails, checking up with them, and coming up with questions for the interview. After communicating with the community partner, I helped work on the Community Partner page and the Get Involved page. This project helped me improve my chinese communication skills and taught me how important it is to stay in contact with people outside of our group but can provide a lot of information for the group.
Week 10 - Magazine draft 2
For this project, we continued working on our magazine and improving it. As usual, I was still responsible for contacting the community partner, so I came up with more detailed and relavant questions to learn more about the housing inequality issue and some of the information we couldn't found on the internet. After that, I worked on improving the Community Partner page and the Get Involved page by adding more details and making the content clearer. This project helped me understand the importance of research and communication.
Week 11 - Magazine draft 3
For this project, Josephine and I first had a meeting with our community partner. From the meeting, we learned more about housing inequality, how it affects people in Taiwan, and how can we actually help them. After the meeting, we organized the main points and made them clearer and easier to read. I also worked on the magazine layout and helped design the cover. This project helped me better understand the issue and how to organize information in a clear way.
Week 12 - Magazine draft 4
For this project, I worked on improving the grammar and typos in the magazine. I also continued working on the Get Involved page and helped improve the magazine cover to make it more engaging. Since we were making a key chain as our tangible design to raise money for our community partner to support lower income families, I sent a email to our community partner and asked about getting a donation box. This project taught me the importance of paying attention to details and communicating with others.
Week 13 - Magazine final draft
For this project, our group focused on making sure everything was ready for the final version of the magazine. During the gallery walk, some classmates gave us feedback that the dark blue color as the backgound of our magazine did not really connect to our topic. After this feedback, we changed the brand kit color to dark red, which better showed the urgency of housing inequality. We also fixed the page numbers, the layout, added the final images, and put all of our sources to the citation page. This project showed me how feedback can help improve a final product and make it more effective.
Week 14-15 - Mock Exhibition & T-shirt making (No picture)
For this project, I helped with the T-shirt printing. I was not the person printing the logo because I was worried about ruining the T-shirt. Instead, I helped by putting the wooden board inside the shirts and drying them after they were printed. This took a lot of time because we had to print both sides of the T-shirt, and there were many steps. We also see different projects from other classes during the mock exhibition and presented our own project to others. This was a good chance to practice explaining our project and learn about what other students were working on. Through this project, I learned more about teamwork and how to communicate our ideas to different audiences.
Week 16 - Exhitbion project pitch
For this project, we worked on our exhibition pitch and prepared a script to introduce our project. I spent a lot of time practicing before the presentation because I wanted to do well, but during the pitch, I turned very nervous and could only remember parts of my script. I forgot some of the points I wanted to talk about, which affected my grade. Even though the grade was pretty awful, I learned that I need to practice more and find better ways to remember my key points. This experience helped me understand the importance of being prepared and staying confident while presenting. In the future, I will practice more with my peers or myself before presentations and prepare simple notes with key points instead of just trying to memorizing the whole script.
Reflection on Growth:
Magazine contribution: One part of the magazine I worked on was the Community partner page. I was responsible for contacting our community parnter, sending emails, preparing interview questions, and help writing the content for the page. I also worked on the magazine layout and cover design.
Feedback: During the gallery, we got a feeback saying that our magazine color didn't connects to our topic, because the blue color didn't show the seriousness of housing inequality. After the feeback, we chnaged the color to dark red, which actually represent the urgency of the issue.
Connection: This project connects to English class because we needed to research, organize ideas, write articles, and edit our writing, just like wrting expository essay. These skills helps us write a better cotent for our magazine. These skills helped us create better content for our magazine.
Previous: These project also connects to our previous PBL projects because we continued using graphic design to raise awarness about social issues. For example, the earlier SDG projects also required us to research real world problems and use design to share our ideas. However, this project was more challenging because we worked with a community partner and maked a cool magazine.
Grwoth: Compared to my past working habits, I became better at planning and communicating with my group. Before, I usually focused only on finishing my own part, but this project helped me understand that teamwork is important because every part affects the final result. I also learned to ask for feedback and make changes instead of keeping my first idea. In the future, I want to improve my presentation skills by practicing more before presenting.
Social justice Investigation:
At the beginning of the project, I thought housing inequality mainly affected people with no work or a very low incomes. However, after doing research, I learned that many working fmailies also stuggle because housing prices in Taiwan are increasing faster than people's incomes. What suprised me the most was how difficult it can be for some families to afford a stable and safe housing.
Graphic Desgin Growth:
At the beginning of the semester, I thought graphic design was mainly about making things look nice by using colors, images, and layouts. However, after working on different projects throughout the semester, I learned that graphic design is more about communicating ideas and messages clearly. Through projects like the magazine and logo design, I learned that it is important to choose the right colors, layouts, and images that connects to the topic. For example, changing our magazine color helped make the message of housing inequality stronger and easier for people to understand. This project helped me improve my design skills and understand that every design choice should have a purpose.
