We really love hearing from you all so keep sending us those emails each week to 5thclassteachers@virginians.ie
Hello Everyone in 5th class,
We are so delighted that most of you are keeping in contact with us every week and sending on your completed work. The SESE projects are looking super and we can really see all the hard work and effort you are putting into your work at home. We hope you got a chance to collect your books and belongings from school this week to keep you busy for another few weeks.
Once again, we have updated ‘Our Amazing Gallery’ page with all of the wonderful work the children in fifth class have sent us recently. You will notice that lots of children enjoyed baking this week to link in with their learning about 'weight' in Maths and we can see from the pictures that you have all successfully baked some nice treats for your family.
We hope you have all got the opportunity to check out our additional blog pages ‘Challenge Yourself’ and ‘Relax, Unwind and Read’ as well as trying out some of the different activities on each of these pages. Both are located at the bottom of the menu on the left. Please keep an eye on these pages for exciting activities and updates that are sure to keep you busy.
We would really like it if you could all stay in contact with us by continuing to send us an email at least once a week. It is great to hear about all the interesting things you have been keeping busy doing or even just having a chat as we are missing being at school and seeing you all in fifth class everyday. So keep those emails coming in to us at: 5thclassteachers@virginians.ie If you would like to see your work uploaded on the blog don’t forget to send parental permission.
Below you will see this week’s blog where we have uploaded some new activities for you to work on throughout the week. Again, everything does not need to be completed, just try your best. We can't wait to see what your sweet advertisements and SESE projects will look like this week! We also added in some nice drama and music activities for something different.
Last week we added a quick survey to link in with our theme of wellness and wellbeing. We would really encourage you all to click on the following link to answer a few short questions. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfHoRGXNFaIO43cl_T83r-EDWg42FF56za1I5U4yP4_fvjhWA/viewform We would greatly appreciate it if everyone in fifth class takes part in this survey for us.
We look forward to hearing from you all this week. We miss you all so much!
Stay safe,
Ms. Brady and Ms. O’Reilly
1) Learn all about advertisements and their purpose on this PowerPoint.
· Think about some of the descriptions- can you visualise the sweet, would you love to have one? Have you ever had one before? Etc.
2) Imagine that you are applying for a job as sweet inventor in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
· Your task is to design an imaginary sweet that would be interesting enough for Mr. Wonka to try out and include in his factory.

· Create a small advertisement for your sweet on an A4 sheet/2copybook pages and design it to make it visually appealing.
3) Write a short paragraph further describing the new sweet you have created for Mr. Wonka.
Think about how you could describe the sweet- can you visualise the sweet, would you love to have one? Have you ever had one before? What does it taste like? Etc.
· Correct the following sentences using the correct punctuation.
You may need to include capital letters, full stops, question marks and inverted commas to correct these sentences.
We were delighted to see so many children enjoyed completing their maths activities on weight last week and particularly enjoyed baking and creating their own recipes so well done to everyone. Below you will find a variety of activities based on the topic of capacity which will be our focus in Maths this week.
Use these three worksheets to complete some simple activities based on capacity in the home.
Complete the conversions on the worksheet below to recap on how to convert litres to millilitres.
Try and solve these challenges using what you have learned about capacity.
Can you find and record 20 different items in your house that you could use to measure capacity. We wonder will anyone find 20 different things or more.
Using the word ‘Samhradh’ try your best to make an acrostic poem in Irish. You could use words/sentences or a mixture of both to try and complete the poem.
Now that you have spent some time learning about ‘an samhradh’ and all the vocabulary associated with it, see can you play 30 seicand and beat your score/record.
Using a dice/selecting random numbers, put a simple story/sentences together about Summer using the prompt sheet below.
Lifecycle of a butterfly. Use the PowerPoint below to learn all about the life cycle of a butterfly in Irish. You could draw a simple picture to show what you have learned about the life cycle of a butterfly.
Pick one of Ireland’s many tourist attractions/famous landmarks and research all about it. Choose wisely as this could be a place we decide to go and visit after lockdown. To get you started some examples include:
The Cliff’s of Moher, The Giant’s Causeway, The Ring of Kerry, Tayto Park, Croke Park, The Aviva Stadium, Newgrange, Glendalough, Titanic Belfast, The Aran Islands and Carrauntoohil Co. Kerry, The GPO, Dublin Zoo
Project time: Choose any one of Ireland’s famous attractions or landmarks and create a brochure/poster to promote its’ beauty. Here are some questions you could use to get you started.
1. Where is it located?
2. When was it formed/founded?
3. What can you do there?
4. Why is it famous?
5. How far away is it and how might you get there?
6. Can you describe its’ specific features?
7. Is it free or how much would it cost to visit?
8. Any other interesting facts/information?
1) Using the PowerPoint take a look at some of the wonderful pop art Andy Warhol has created. He is known for using colour and repeating designs/pictures. This week we would like for you to try and create a piece of pop art that is unique using whatever available materials you have at home.
2) If the original activity doesn't appeal to you an alternative art activity you could do is design a picture of the famous Irish tourist attraction/landmark you choose to accompany your information brochure/poster.
You have practiced gymnastics over the past few weeks. This week we would love if you could put a sequence together using some of the new moves/skills you have learned. We suggest that you pick 5 movements for your sequence. E.g. Crawl, pick a roll, pick a balance, pick a jump/leap, pick another roll. Practice your sequence a few times and aim to perform it as smooth as possible.
We thought some of you might like to brush up on your soccer skills this week. Here is a short video that focuses on practicing 10 skills in soccer. You could try these and maybe come up with a few of your own.

This week we are also suggesting that you go on a nature walk with your family if the sun is shining and the weather is nice. Most people may be able to go to the local forest while others may have to go around their own area at home. We would love for you to take some pictures of interesting minibeasts or nice flowers you come across. Hopefully you will be able to see lots of new plants blooming. Scroll to the bottom of the blog to see some of the things you might look out for on your nature walk.
We know lots of you are passionate about drama and acting so why not play a game of charades with someone in your family this week. All you need to do is pick something from this list, don't tell anyone and try and act it out for them to guess. Try not to use any words/talk throughout as this will make it harder.
Here is another quick activity that you can play individually or with others. All you have to do is read one of the task cards and name five things. Maybe you should set a time limit before starting as this will make the activity more challenging.
This is a nice activity all about you! You could print it and fill it in or simply write the headings of each star into your copy and complete it there either. It will give you a chance to think about all those positive qualities you each have and what makes everyone different.
We want to make sure you get a chance to relax and listen to some of your favourite songs this week. Create a 'class playlist' with 10-15 songs in it that you and your classmates could listen to if we were in school. Be sure to choose songs that are appropriate for school and ones that you think your classmates would like. We wonder will anyone pick some of the same songs...
Read this short comprehension to learn more about Ed Sheeran who is a very popular music artist. You might even decide to include some of his biggest hits in your very own playlist.
