Standard 1 - Teaching Diverse Students -The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
One of the knowledge indicators to be a competent teacher was reflected in my Zine project. I talked about active inclusion in that unit of my Zine project. 1A of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards states: one understands the spectrum of student diversity (e.g., race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special education, gifted, English language learners (ELL), gender, and the assets that each student brings to learning across the curriculum.
In my zine, I reflected on various aspects of injustice. For example, I talked about classism and how many students struggle due to financial burdends. Another example, is social injustice in terms of race. In order for teachers to actively help students, they must reflect on their own predjudice. Thus, being aware of one's own bias can help students get more equitable treatment by being anti-racist.
One of the performance indicators to be a competent teacher was demonstrated in an adobe express template for my students to reflect about their own cultures. 1L of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards states: uses information about students’ individual experiences, families, cultures, and communities to create meaningful learning opportunities and enrich instruction for all students.
In this project, students were able to reflect not only on a certain cultural background but also on their familial roots. Thus, many students were able to find out more about themselves and other students. Adobe also has an option to use other language keyboards which helped some of my newcomer students. Furthermore, the use of pictures in Adobe also helped my ELL students as they were able to use less words.
