Standard 4 - Learning Environment – The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
In the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, one of the knowledge indicators to be a competent teacher states the following:
understands the use of student data (formative and summative) to design and implement behavior management strategies (4H).
I used this behavaior chart with multiple students who have attention seeking tendencies that lead to multiple disruptions. Using the data from these charts, has allowed us to assess student progess when it comes to disruptions. This has also allowed me to create consequences and rewards based on each students and how they are reacting to the chart. For example, if one of my students gets five strikes, the student loses their recess. If they get zero strikes for three days in a row, they get to choose their reward. Using this data has allowed us to be able to predict when the student might have a hard day. For example, after the weekend, one of my students is more likely to have five strikes a day. Therefore, we have implemented a system that the social worker sees him at the beginning of every Monday.

In the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, one of the performance indicators to be a competent teacher states the following:
creates a safe and healthy environment that maximizes student learning (4I).
The classroom I am in allows for both group and individual work. The way it is set up allows for students to see the board clearly, while being able to interact with other student. There are various flexible seating options that allow for student choice and autonomy in their seating. It also allos for change of scenery and being able to move around the classroom at certain times. This has allowed for a safer environment in which students can interact easily with each other. It has also created a healthy environment because the classroom is student led and student choice comes first.
