Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
In the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, one of the knowledge indicators to be a competent teacher states the following:
understands how to use a variety of formal and informal assessments to recognize and address the reading, writing, and oral communication needs of each student (6H).
I created a plan based on running record and other informal assessment results from a student. This instructional plan to help my student to improve in multiple reading aspects allowed me to reflect on startegies to help my different levels of students. Thus, different students might need different types of assessments. For example, a student might be uninterested in the content we are reading about. This could affect the student's performance. Using multiple assessments allow me to best help my students. My student assessment project is linked below: Student Assessment Project.
In the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards, one of the performance indicators to be a competent teacher states the following:
facilitates the use of appropriate word identification and vocabulary strategies to develop each student’s understanding of content (6L).
In the lesson plan that is linked below I used a strategy to help ELL students better understand new vocabulary. It included using visual diagrams, sentences, and defintions. Thus, it allowed students to implement new vocabulary words using multiple strategies depending on their level of comfort. The Vocabulary Development Lesson Plan is linked below.
