自清代中葉開始，即有唐山藝人在台灣中部演出潮調布袋戲，稍晚，台北地區也有泉州的南管布袋戲；約略同時，中部的鹿港、南部的臺南都有藝人傳入南管調或白字仔布袋戲。

戲班將師承自唐山老師傅所傳的單齣戲目稱為「籠底戲」，有「壓箱絕活」的意思。最早在台灣演出南管布袋戲的演師，一般公認是「龍鳳閣」的陳婆，擅演的南管戲有《回番書》、《養閒堂》、《寶塔記》等齣，「金泉同」的童全則擅演《掃秦》、《唐寅磨鏡》、《白扇記》等齣，至今尚為「小西園」、「亦宛然」的籠底戲齣。 「新興閣」保留的潮調傳統戲齣有《結義雙團圓》、《一門三及第》、《金簪記》等。

典型的南管布袋戲，除後場使用南管戲曲外，前場偶戲表演亦沿襲梨園戲排場，動作十分細膩，以文戲為主，格調高雅，文辭優美，頗受上流階層人士喜愛，卻不易被基層群眾所接受，曲高和寡。

Since the mid-Qing dynasty, artists from Tangshan began performing Chaodiao puppet theater in central Taiwan. Shortly after, Quanzhou’s Nanguan Glove puppetry appeared in the Taipei area.

The troupes referred to the old scripts passed down from predecessors, Tangshan masters as Basket-Bottom Plays, meaning“ Inherited Skills / Heirloom.”

北管以打擊樂器為主，音色激昂高亢，節奏明快，特別適合在廟會及喜慶的場合當作伴奏，清代中末葉以後成為臺灣戲曲音樂的主流。 

掌中戲班結合臺灣各地最盛行的北管子弟戲，進行布袋戲改良。幾位著名的演師如李天祿、黃海岱、鍾任祥、吳清發等都曾經是北管子弟，這些演師將其學自北管的曲譜與戲齣應用於布袋戲演出，促成了北管布袋戲的發展。這些來自北管戲曲與演出的劇本，通稱為「正本戲」。  

這時期戲班紛紛捨棄南管採用北管後場，戲本也以武戲為主，配合激昂的音樂，加入大量武打雜耍特技如:跑馬、打藤牌、跳窗等，大受歡迎，致使優雅緩慢的南管布袋戲被緊鑼密鼓的北管布袋戲所取代。

• During the Japanese colonial period, puppet troupes adapted to the trend by using popular Beiguan music in their performances and integrating Beiguan scores and plays into puppet shows. These scripts and performances from Beiguan opera were collectively known as "Beiguan puppetry."

正本戲的戲齣有限，為應付日漸興盛的演出需求，布袋戲的主演們開始向傳統章回小說取材。如《鋒劍春秋》、《三國演義》、《隋唐演義》等演義小說都是演師們取材改編的對象。台灣人俗稱章回小說為「古册」，依此演出的戲碼也就稱為「古册戲」。 

依小說類型約略可分，神怪戲如《封神榜》、《西遊記》、《濟公傳》；公案戲《彭公案》、《施公案》、《包公案》等。

• The scripts were based on traditional chaptered novels, including The Romance of the Three Kingdoms(三國演義), and The Romance of Sui and Tang Dynasties (隋唐演義).

當古冊戲不再讓觀眾感到新鮮刺激之後， 1930年代，演師們在籠底戲與古冊戲之外，改編清末的俠義章回小說，如《七俠五義》、《小五義》、《七劍十三俠》等。主角多為江湖好漢，個個身懷絕技，行俠仗義，為「劍俠戲」的嚆矢。 

光復後，演師們改編民國20、30年流行的武俠小說或自行創編，以少林寺故事為主，其特點在於這些小說中的主要人物都是江湖奇俠，發展出吐劍光、祭飛劍、法寶等情節，被稱為「劍俠戲」。

1947年發生二二八事件後，禁止民眾戶外集會，布袋戲轉入戲院售票演出，稱為「內台戲」，劍俠戲是內台戲初期的主流劇種。

到了1949、1950年，亦宛然演出「我是山人」的少林寺洪熙官、方世玉等英雄故事，一本本連台演下來，非常轟動，欲罷不能，帶動布袋戲的少林熱潮。 

以北管後場演出劍俠戲著名的演師有:新莊「小西園」許天扶、台北「亦宛然」李天祿、虎尾「五洲園」黃海岱、西螺「新興閣」鍾任祥、關廟「玉泉閣」黃秋藤、屏東「全樂閣」鄭全明等人..。

著名劇目:《五美六俠錦飛劍》、《蕭寶童白蓮劍》、《龍頭金刀俠》、《怪俠紅黑巾》、《清宮三百年》等

After 1945, performers began adapting popular martial arts novels from the 1930s and 1940s or creating their own stories, often centered around the Shaolin Temple. The main characters in these novels were typically wandering heroes, and new elements were developed, such as sword-light emitting, flying-sword summoning, and the use of magical artifacts, leading to the genre being called " Swordsmen Plays. "

1937年中日戰爭爆發，日本政府加強管制演出外台戲並禁演傳統戲齣，史稱「禁鼓樂」，布袋戲團紛紛轉業或歇業。1942年日本政府成立「台灣演劇協會」先後准許7支人形劇團在戲院演出「皇民劇」，以日語、日本人物造型戲偶、日本配樂演出殖民政府審查過的劇本，如《鞍馬天狗》、《水戶黃門》、《血染燈臺》、《猿飛佐助》等，演出時機與場地都由日本當局規定，演戲功能在於宣傳殖民政府的殖民政策與灌輸殖民思想。目前各劇團留下的，大抵只有戲偶和少數的劇本。 

皇民化布袋戲雖然短暫，但這段期間，劇團開始改用現代人形木偶、西洋配樂、布景式戲台等，這些變革對台灣布袋戲的發展有著深遠的影響。

當時准許的7支人形劇團(布袋戲團):台北「新國風」、「小西園」、台中「旭勝座」、台南「五洲園」、「新興(閣)」、「永光」、「福光」。

In 1942, the Japanese government established the "Taiwan Theater Association" and authorized seven puppet troupes to perform "Kominka plays" in theaters. These performances featured scripts approved by the colonial government, with Japanese language, Japanese-style puppets, and Japanese music. Notable plays included Kurama Tengu, Mito Komon, Bloodstained Lantern, and Sarutobi Sasuke. The timing and venues for performances were dictated by the Japanese authorities, to promote Japanization policies and instill colonial ideology.

1949年起國民政府為防範匪諜活動，嚴格管制演出外台戲，並要求劇團在正戲開演前，需先演出一段「反共抗俄劇」以宣導政令，戲偶多梳西裝頭、戴兵帽的現代人型偶頭，戲服也採用現代服裝樣式，演出《憤怒的火燄》、《女匪幹》等反共宣傳劇。這段時間不長，各劇團約只留下一些戲偶，和少數的劇本，供作歷史見證。 

Starting in 1949, the Nationalist government, to prevent communist espionage activities, strictly controlled outdoor theater performances. They required troupes to perform a 30-minute "Anti-Communist and Anti-Russian Play" before the main play as a means of promoting government policies.

廣播布袋戲，是以聲音取勝的表演藝術，聽眾單憑聲音來想像表演的內容。於錄音室錄製演出過程，交由廣播電臺播放者，稱為廣播布袋戲。這種演出是一種無償的方式，聽眾不須支付任何費用即可欣賞精彩的演出。但它通常與商業行為相結合，最普遍者是與藥廠（商）合作，於中場休息時間進行藥品廣告，達到促銷其產品的目的。如鄭一雄於1956年在中廣臺南臺錄製布袋戲《三國演義》，連播約三個月， 開啟廣播布袋戲之先河。

1960代起，金光戲大行其道，廣播公司爭相延聘布袋戲藝人錄播節目，開啟廣播布袋戲的紀元。結果造成臺南地區民眾不午休而聽收音機的特殊現象。後繼者為1958年臺南關廟玉泉閣第二團黃秋藤，在岡山正言電臺的播演。之後，陸續有陳山林、沈明正、曾志鵬、鄭能波等人加入。 

In 1956, Cheng Yi-hsiung recorded The Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a radio drama at the Tainan Broadcasting Station, marking the beginning of radio puppetry.

Radio puppetry is a form where listeners imagine the glove puppetry storyline through sound. The performance is recorded in a studio and then broadcast by radio stations, allowing listeners to enjoy the show without any cost.

However, it is often combined with commercial activities, such as pharmaceutical companies advertisements, played during intermissions as a form of commercial service to promote products.

In 1970, Huang Chun-hsiung`s  The Scholar Swordsman of Yunzhou, featuring historical characters like Shih Yan-wen and The Man in the Mirror, became household names, leading the ratings.
