The first step of strategic management plan is, as we have already seen it in the general description of business management, the business idea. This section are divided in two main ideas which are the business idea itself and the tool to show this business ideal in a more visual manner, by means of a business model CANVAS.
For the time being, the current "Aeropuerto Internacional de Mérida" is a more national airport than international one contrary to what its name shows. Besides, the airport traffic is more or less divided in a similar weight into passengers traffic and cargo traffic. One of the main objectives of the present project is that the airport changes its current situation, becoming a more international airport in the medium term. In addition, we also want to individualize the passenger traffic for this new required extension and leave the current one for cargo and civil aviation.
As most people know, most of the revenues of an airport come from:
This latter means that our customers will be airlines and all the companies that desire to rent a local inside the airport.
Regarding to the features that the technical design of the airport provides, there is one value that will make us unique. Which will it be? Our new extension of the airport will cover the business demand due to its privileged geographical location. In other airports like "Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún", which is bigger than the one of Mérida, the traffic is more related to leisure and in our case, most people who will need to flight are more related to business or work. In fact, with this new extension of the airport, the profile of passengers will be both business and leisure, because Merida has an important touristic part (it is in Riviera Maya), although the main new opportunity that represents is to cover the business or work demand of Mexico. Keeping this in mind, both airlines and retail customers will feel attracted to have a place in our airport.
The best tool to show how our business operates with all elements involved is the business model CANVAS. As we have two main customers, airlines and retailers, there are two business model CANVAS, each one for each customer. Both two are shown below:
As it can be seen, the main differences are based on the approach of each sector or segment. In the case of airlines, the activities, partners, value proposition and revenue streams are defined from current airlines needs and fees. And, on the other hand, for the case of retailers, the same blocks are defined from current retailers needs and taxes. As it has already mentioned, the main difference is found out in the perspective of the business for each sector.
