#YSL
Young Science Leader (#YSL) Series
Welcome to Young Science Leader series of talks. The talks will be in similar pattern as TEDx and SLW series. The YSL series will feature several emerging Science Leaders from India and abroad, they will share their life story, and will have extended QnA with a focus on higher education and career guidance. Please note that speakers of YSL are not students/research scholars but people established in a field for a long time who has already mentored several mentees.
Pattern of #YSL sessions
Talks will be of 30 min of your story followed by another 30 min of QnA. We suggest making the talk as general as possible, no technical details about your own research other than presenting the overall summary in accessible manner. You may share your early childhood experiences, influences on choosing a career in science, role models/books, science leaders you admire and why, and so on. You can emphasize your views on the following aspects (you can choose any one or more):
1. Critical Thinking
2. Group communication
3. Problem-solving and Conflict Resolution
4. Flexibility
5. Creativity and innovation
6. Time Management
7. Risk-taking
8. Mentoring
9. Teamwork
10. Decision making
11. Active listening and empathy
12. Cross-cultural communication
13. Women in Science
14. Lab culture
Audience will be PhD students and early career scientists/faculties. We will also have extended questions and answers session on higher education/career/research opportunities/grants in your field of expertise.

#MentX
An important condition to be called for YSL as a speaker is that the person has to mentor a few students (up to 20) in our Virtual Internship program, #MentX. For more details of #MentX, see here.
Instructions for intern allotment:
Please edit/comment the allocated sheet shared via email
Look at column E (student's preference of research area) and choose mentees by writing your full name in column H
Column E is the theme student want to pursue, so make sure you have expertise in that field. For example, if a student mention geology and you are a veterinarian who have no expertise in geology, please do not choose this student, instead look for whoever indicated your field of expertise.
You may choose up to twenty mentees
Please look at column F while choosing the research topic, many applicants are school students
You may directly contact the student via email and start virtual internship immediately. No further communication with us is required. No formal allotment as well. Next step is to start the internship.
Duration of internship
All internships will be for 2 months from the date of initial email to mentees by the mentor
You may plan to write a brief review with the student, guide her or him on how to write a review, plan an in-silico/survey based research etc
You have complete freedom to choose the topic in consultation with mentees, however beware of ethics
Exit strategy
Students will submit a brief report on what they have done for internship and their reflections at the end of 2 months
You may continue to mentor the student as long as you like (even life long) at your own level.
If students are not co-operating with you on internship, then you can mention unsatisfactory at the final feedback stage
Code of ethics
Communications with mentees will only be about virtual internship within professional context
Frequent, weekly communication is essential for internship. Choosing a mentee just for sake of being part of the program and hardly communicating will not be treated as internship
At the end of internship, mentees will be encouraged to write feedback about their mentors
Connection with YSL Talk series
Those Young Science Leaders who are actively part of this internship program will be prioritized while inviting as speakers for ongoing YSL program
How to participate in #YSL?
The talks will be live streamed at YouTube channel.
Past talks can be accessible at #YSL Playlist
