The US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) was established on March 16, 1802, with the mission to secure the Nation, energize the economy, and reduce disaster risk through the delivery of vital engineering solutions.
Throughout the 19th century, they supervised construction of coastal fortifications, lighthouses, jetties and piers for harbors, and mapped navigation channels. In the late 1960s, they became the leaders in environmental preservation and restoration.
Currently they oversee the Nation's natural and cultural resource management programs and regulate activities in the Nations' wetlands. The USACE contribute to both military and "works of a civil nature".
