Below are some materials and information to assist English University Supervisors during the Core 3 Teaching Internship (fall semester only). Please also visit the Core 3 Kick-Off Meeting page for additional materials and resources.
Communication with Interns and Mentor Teachers
Please maintain regular communication with your interns and their mentor teachers throughout the semester so they see you as their first point of contact when it comes to their Core 3 internship. I recommend touching base at least 1-2x a month, beginning the first week of WSU classes (or earlier).
Send a greeting/welcome email to mentor teachers and interns during the first week of classes to establish your presence and willingness to be a source of support and information.
I will copy you on emails I send to my assigned interns and MTs, and I invite you to copy me on emails you send so we can ensure alignment of our expectations, as well as share ideas with one another.
Formal Observations
Schedule at least one (possibly two, if needed) formal observations of each of your assigned interns this semester. Initiate email contact with interns early in the semester to let them know your availability.
For each observation, please do the following:
1. Complete the KEEP Observation Form.
a. Provide both numerical and written feedback for the intern. For written feedback, I recommend that you provide both praise and questions/suggestions.
b. Provide a copy of the completed form to the intern, the mentor teacher, and me. This is probably most easily accomplished by creating a digital copy and distributing it via email within 24 hours of the observation and conference.
2. Conference with the intern regarding his/her teaching performance. Ideally, the mentor teacher should be present as well, but this may be more difficult to schedule during Core 3. If you prefer, conferences can take place over the phone or via videoconference.
Formal Observation Assignment
Use the Formal Observation Spreadsheet to record scores and final grade for the Formal Observation Assignment, which is available on Blackboard (or I can also email it to you). Submit this completed spreadsheet to me ASAP but no later than Thanksgiving break.
Interns’ Teaching Reflections
Please review your interns’ teaching reflections this semester. You are not responsible for grading their work, but I encourage you to review their reflections and comment or reach out to them as you see fit. This will give you insight into your interns’ experiences in the field throughout the semester and help you get to know them better.
I will send you a link the list of teaching reflections shortly after their first reflection is due in September. From there, you can click on your interns’ teaching reflections. I will also share the assignment with you, so you can see deadlines for each reflection and provide feedback, as needed.
Attend CI 435E class meetings periodically to participate in “field experience support groups” (meeting privately with your interns for 20-30 minutes to check in, problem-solve, and build community). I will touch base with you at the start of the semester to confirm dates and times.
Travel Reimbursement (for in-person observations)
Submit your travel form to School of Education Office Manager in Corbin 151, so you can be reimbursed for mileage to schools. These should be submitted monthly (at the end of the month), once you start traveling to schools.
