1. Standing Cross War Memorial in the Churchyard:

Located at St Marys Church (Grid Ref : SY 61874 90498) - The Memorial Cross is on the right hand side of the path just inside the front roadside entrance gates. Rough hewn cross mounted on plinth. (1200mm high) Listed Grade II


Inscription :

4. Other non-war related memorials in St Mary’s Church

On a wall-mounted stone plaque:

To the memory of William DUNFORD

Shepherd, who died 25th March 1943

aged 79 years. For 56 years Parish

Clerk, a member of the Choir for 63

years and last surviving member of

the Church Band.

And the faithful shall abide with Him in love

And with His arm shall He protect them


Left : John Dunford (1825-1897) with his clarinet. His son played the bass viol and Richard Tompkins the flute.

Dorchester Museum has a number of musical instruments all played in the once popular church bands during the C19th. They also played in village events for dancing, May Pole celebrations, Harvest Home and Carol Services.
