Early Photographs

Unfortunately, early photographs of the village are very rare ! More would be very welcome - they can be scanned and returned !

My thanks for the postcards below lent for scanning already :

Above - View 1 : Looking from south of main road across towards White Friars on the left, Copyhold Lane running between the buildings and the village "Green" in the foreground. The modern bus shelter is now centrally sited in this area.

Above - View 2 :

Above - View 3 : The Grange on the left hand side looking eastward. Colour tinted photo and judging by the girl and lad's clothes say about early 1900's ? Road yet to be surfaced and no traffic ! See view 6 below

Above - View 4 : Similar view to No 3 above but in black and white - probably taken at about the same date ? See view 6 below

Above : View 5 : Same view as Nos 3 & 4 above but at a much later date (c1950's judging by the car). Note that the terrace of cottages in the distance have been rebuilt with the thatch roof gone and walls heightened between the upstairs windows. The large tree behind the cottages also seems to have been removed. Road now tarmaced and telegraph poles on north side of road.

Above : View 6. Looking east again. Photo thought to be about 1890-1900 ?? See views 3 & 4 above
