Week 1 Notes to Parents:
Since the students have free access to IXL, we will teach them how to use this valuable tool in ways that actually help them. :) As we tell the kids, IXL is like a knife -- super helpful for cooking delicious meals and also dangerous if not used carefully. We will work on teaching them how to use this tool in ways that will teach them and not add to their frustration :)
Over the course of the rest of the year, Ms. Trudy and I will aim to cover as many of the 6th grade math standards as possible so that when they go on to 7th grade, they are prepared and confident. Those standards are listed in two different forms here, both of which we will use behind the scenes in our teaching. We are sharing here just as FYI :)

This week we ensured that students understand that all numbers possess factors. We reviewed the idea that prime numbers are divisible only by 1 and themselves, while composite numbers have multiple factors. We practiced breaking numbers into their factors. This is a VERY important skill that is foundational to work with fractions, long division, and much more.
PLEASE NOTE: We are trying to encourage students to use scrap paper and a pencil for their work when they are completing their IXL math. Students should bring in their scrap paper so we can look at their work (and reward them with Hi-Chews haha)!
