What we do at Westmorland Dowsers

Dowsing is a technique that has unlimited applications, including searching for underground water, minerals, ley lines, archaeology, earth energy points or areas, health and healing, finding lost objects etc. etc. etc.  We use a pendulum, pair of rods (bent wires), a forked stick and some people prefer to body dowse.

The Westmorland Dowsers are an informal, friendly regional dowsing group formed in June 2011.  People who are already dowsing (at whatever level of experience), or those simply curious about what dowsing is, are all very welcome to come along to our meetings.

We meet once a month throughout the year.  All dates are on the Calendar of Events page, however, dates do occasionally vary, due to adverse weather, speaker availability, etc.

Our regular winter meeting place is at Shap Memorial Hall CA10 3NL (in the centre of Shap, directly off the A6), where there is plenty of parking.  Meetings start at 10.30 am and Shap Hall is open and the kettle on from about 10 am.

Coffee, and a range of teas and biscuits are provided for members and visitors alike.

Site Visits

Packed lunches, appropriate warm waterproof clothing and stout footwear are recommended for our site visits – which occur most years between April and September. We often meet on site for these days, so please refer to the Calendar of Events for more details about this.

Benefits of WD membership

A varied programme of speakers and outdoor dowsing events held every month throughout the year – indoors at Shap Hall or outdoors at locations in Cumbria. Recently we have found Zoom meetings very enjoyable and members who live far away are able to join us. We hope to include these in future programmes.

Monthly Meeting/Speakers’ Reports

Armchair Dowsing tasks. As Armchair Dowsing Co-ordinator, Liz Laidler emails a questionnaire (which may include a map, photos, etc. that has been set by a volunteer member) to all our members and then sends back the collated results and summary. These challenges have thrown up some interesting results, both regarding the subject matter and also our dowsing techniques.

The informal help that members give to each other at practical events cannot be understated.  Dowsing with others is very helpful to dowsers at all stages.  There is also the opportunity to work with other WD members on local projects.

Dowsers apart, WD also welcomes people with varied interests such as the geography and history of local landscapes, archaeology, health and ancestry.

Have your say at our AGM and offer suggestions at any time on speakers, outdoor events and Armchair Dowsing. We encourage your involvement as it benefits the group.

WD is a member of the British Dowsing Society so you will have shared access to their Magazine, Dowsing Today.

Receive an electronic copy of Dowsing Training Manual courtesy of the Malvern Dowsers and South Herefordfordshire Dowsers. This is a very comprehensive and valuable guide for dowsers, new and experienced.
