We officially made it through our first three days of 4th grade, and what a wonderful start it has been! These first few days have been all about getting to know one another, building our classroom community, and learning what it means to be a successful member of our classroom.
We spent lots of time introducing, practicing, and reviewing our classroom procedures and expectations. Students learned how we enter and exit the classroom, transition between activities, work independently and with partners, use classroom materials, ask for help, and take care of our learning space. Just like explorers need to learn how to use their tools before beginning an expedition, we are taking the time to build strong routines that will help us have a successful year of learning and exploring together!
Thank you for helping make the beginning of our school year such a positive one. I am so excited for everything ahead!
A quick reminder that Friday Folders should be returned to school every Monday morning so they can be ready for the next week's important papers and student work.
Meet the Teacher Forms: If you have not already done so, please also return the completed information forms that were sent home at Meet the Teacher Night.
Thank you for helping our explorers start the week prepared and ready to learn!

📚 Reading & Language Arts
We will begin establishing our reading routines and practicing the skills strong readers use to understand and discuss a text. Students will work on supporting their thinking with evidence from what they read.
✏️ Writing
We will establish our writing routines and begin building our expectations for 4th-grade writing. We'll focus on developing ideas, adding details, and communicating our thinking clearly.
➗ Math
We will begin our first math learning experiences while establishing routines for mathematical thinking, problem solving, partner work, and explaining how we know an answer is correct.
🌎 Social Studies
Our explorers will begin diving into California geography! We will explore California's four major regions—the Coast, Mountains, Central Valley, and Desert—and learn how geography influences the land, climate, natural resources, and ways people live.
Social Emotional Learning This week, we will work on connecting as a class and building relationships. We will be developing classroom norms. Students will be reflecting on their hopes and dreams for 4th grade. We are also introducing a new Social Emotional learning program called Character Strong. Please click here to learn more about it! 🤝 Classroom Community
We will continue practicing our procedures and expectations. Building these habits now gives us more time for learning, collaboration, and fun throughout the year!

Back to School Night is an opportunity for families to learn more about our classroom, curriculum, expectations, routines, and what to expect during your child's 4th-grade year.
To help create a distraction-free environment where teachers and families can connect, Westlake is encouraging families to make this a non-student event whenever possible.
Kindergarten–5th Grade Sessions:
⭐ Session 1: 6:00–6:30 PM
⭐ Session 2: 6:40–7:10 PM
The sessions are identical, so families only need to attend one.
Need childcare in order to attend? The BASE program will offer supervision, but space may be limited. Families who need childcare should complete the BASE RSVP form as soon as possible.
Tuesday, September 1st
K–8 Fall Picture Day is coming up!
This is a UNIFORM picture day.
All students will have their picture taken for the yearbook and student IDs, even if families choose not to purchase a picture package. Kindergarten–5th grade classes will also take a class group photo.
Families can pre-purchase pictures...
Westlake is asking every family to complete the 2026–2027 Educational Benefit Form, even if you don't believe your family qualifies for free or reduced-price meals.
Good news—this year we qualify to use the SHORT form, so completing it should only take a few minutes!
These forms are extremely important because they help determine funding available to support our students and schools. Every family's response matters.
