Our activities and opportunities for volunteers 😊
Education
First and foremost, our activities evolve around supporting education and life skills for children and young adults in our local communities
We place volunteers in local government schools for them to support lessons. Usually this is as a teaching assistant to a local teacher or by taking small groups of students out of their classes to give them increased attention. We do not drop volunteers in the deep end, expecting them to be able to manage large classes of children. We have a great network of local schools that we trust can help us find the right classroom, age groups and subjects for each individual volunteer.
Volunteers also have plenty of opportunities to be involved in more informal learning with our project children. This can be done through organised tutoring, 1 to 1 reading and general games and play during evenings and weekends.
Football and Sports Training
Our football academy has been the long established aspect of our projects, running since 2004. Training takes place Monday to Friday 4pm to 6pm and hundreds of children have passed through the ‘academy’ over the previous two decades, being supported through sport and games to build confidence and give direction to multiple young persons. Few may make a career in their sport but they receive huge amounts of support our coaching team and international volunteers to engage in education and to make the most of any opportunities.
Volunteers are able to work alongside the local coaches to run drills and training sessions and also encouraged to join training matches should they feel confident. Volunteers can also teach other sports or run general fitness and games, some past examples include volleyball, rugby, martial arts, yoga. There are always a fresh generation of children that are looking to play an learn with incoming volunteers – it just takes some motivation, ideas and occasionally a ball.
Cultural Centre
Also running since 2004, the culture club has been attracting teenagers and young adults to come and play and express themselves. The club meets once or twice a week depending on whether we have events planned/ volunteers on site and usually comprises traditional drumming, dancing, singing, drama and arts and crafts. Volunteers are encouraged to attend and bring their energy and ideas. You can teach or be taught drumming, dancing by our young experts. Ghana has incredible traditional and contemporary music and every Ghanaian seems to be born with rhythm and flare…
Volunteers can also bring any other fresh ideas, whether that be arts, instruments, drama, improv, magic and anything else. We have a pool of young people with incredible energy. All interaction they receive is super beneficial is shaping confidence, ambition and outlook. It’s also great fun!!
Girls Club
We also have two ‘girls clubs’ supporting teenagers and young women to emphasise the importance of education, teach life skills, health, hygiene and safety awareness. We aim to provide information and support through our amazing leaders, Irene and Mary to give these young ladies confidence. This is such a critical age group in Ghana, still in many respects a male-dominated society, with high rates of school drop-out, early marriage and teenage pregnancy.
These clubs take place after school several times per week. Volunteers can support Irene or Mary in facilitating these sessions, talking about a whole range of subjects from education and career, personal rights and safety, health and hygiene, cooking and home economics and any other ideas. Part of the strength of these clubs is to provide a safe space and supportive peer group between young women in our communities.
Local clinic
The local health clinic in Tafo is not officially part of our project but we have assisted qualified volunteers to do placements here to observe, support and advise if possible. There is a very professional and motivated team working in the clinic but they face challenges regards resources. In 2025, we supported the clinic with some funding to help them purchase essentials to benefit the local communities.
Hostel
Finally we have our hostel that approximately 20 young boys stay during term times. The boys are accommodated for various reasons, for example they come from poor homes/ big families and to assist in helping them attend school regularly with support. Volunteers will naturally spend a large amount of time here as it is in the centre of Tafo and is the location that volunteers will eat their meals here and spend time on evenings and weekends playing and socialising with our students.
 A day in the life
7.00 to 8.00 - Wakey Wakey
The day begins with breakfast time at the hostel
Â
8.00 to 14.00 - Time for class 😊
Volunteers will spend majority of the day in the schools supporting classroom learning. Timetable will differ slightly for each individual.
14.00 to 16.00 - Siesta
In such a hot climate, volunteers are free to head home for rest, chill at the hostel or make an interesting excursion
16.00 to 18.00 - Time for some fun
Our afterschool clubs will begin, with several options to participate depending on the day of the week (see above)…
From 18.00- As the sun sets…
It is time to have a good evening meal at the hostel. Evening time is also free time but volunteers often may stay at the hostel to play games, play card, do some tutoring. Alternatively you can head back to the accommodation to relax, read a book, watch a film etc..
Expectations from volunteers
As we head into 2026 we still do not request any financial fee from volunteers. Food and accommodation are covered but naturally you will need to cover your flights, transit, visa and once in Ghana, other daily costs such as phone credit, taxis and extra snacks etc.. The only actual fee we may request is for pick up from Accra whic hwe charge 50USD.
We do ask for volunteers to be professional and act maturely at all times. All volunteers must have meet with our international coordinators in advance to understand our expectations and general professional and personal boundaries. We also ask volunteers to engage in a debriefing after the visit, to give us a feedback their experience and then follow this up with a review of the experience on Workaway or on our website. We also hope deeply that volunteers wish to remain in touch, continue to support the project with voluntary donations, by spreading the word or in assisting in managing the projects.
