WAVO’s mission is simply to improve the lives of West Africans, primarily those living in poverty. Our specific efforts center around:
Fundraising to fulfill individual basic needs (housing, food, education, clothing), especially for children and young adults
Providing opportunities for international volunteers to visit and provide direct support to West African communities
Working with local nonprofits to provide assistance and to create self-sustaining organizations
To expand and redefine our program and its impact from time to time as necessary to meet the challenges of supporting West African people
We have various projects running simultaneously to support eduication and life skills of our students and to create fun and interesting environment for all of those involved
Supporting local schools - we aim to support as we can in providing equipment and supplies and in sending volunteers to support. In 2022 and 2023 we have provided dozens of computers to support ICT learning as well as construction of a new science lab.
Some schools we struggle against lack of resources and so volunteers can also attempt to supplement learning with additional tutoring and reading clubs on weekends and evenings.
Football academy - taking place every weekday afternoon, we have multiple teams that go through fitness, drills and practice matches. Volunteers can support with direct coaching or with more general fitness and games. Competitive games and tournaments happen on weekends.
Cultural academy - three afternoons per week - we have many children attending to practice their hobbies - from drumming, music, dancing. Our students here also love creative arts if volunteers bring such supplies, ideas and enthusiasm.
Sekmonds - our sister project - an afterschool club happening each week to support girls and young women in supporting education and broader life skills. This is now running in two seperate villiages and we hope to continue expanding.
Our hostel - is where many of our students stay in term times and provides a central meeting place for coming together, meal times and other activities.
Greg and Rory met in 2006, each on their first visit to Ghana. They volunteered with the Ultimate Volunteer Organisation, working with UVO leaders (Eric and Christian) to raise donations, provide physical goods to the program, and find other volunteers. Since first working with UVO they have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the project and have helped find over 50 volunteers to visit. They both maintain regular contact with Eric and Christian, whose continual dedication and sacrifice to the well-being of local children is inspiring.

Harry and Greg met in Accra, Ghana at a networking event in 2022. They hit it off immediately and Greg volunteered as an advisor for a biology startup that Harry was building. In 2023 Harry was admitted to a PhD program at Northeastern University in Boston. Harry has a significant amount of volunteer experience in Ghana and is a strong believer in the importance of education in improving opportunities for young people. He has joined the WAVO board as of June 2024.
Our current partner organisation in Ghana is the Ultimate Volunteer Organisation (UVO). In the future we may choose to work with additional agencies in Ghana, provided they meet our standards for trust, impact, and reliability.
