As a partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, Davey Tree Expert Co., and the Cleveland Cavaliers, we will be giving back by planting one tree in honor of every 3-pointer that was shot during the 2021-2022 season. Get a refresher course, or learn for the first time, about the BEHI assessment. Stream Restoration Ecologist Elizabeth Hiser will lead a training on how to assess streambank erosion using BEHI assessment methodology. BEHI looks at several streambank characteristics to determine the erosion potential: bank angle or undercutting, geologic layers, root structures within the bank, and more. A 2021 inventory discovered 70 standing trees out of the original 273 Moses Cleaveland Trees that were designated as descendants of the local prehistoric forest. Join Dr. Roy Larick to learn how these magnificent tree specimens (they are photogenic!) can provide insight into which big tree species grew where in natural Cleveland and how they can help us to grow a more natural urban canopy. Help restore the native vegetation of this wetland complex. Join CMP Natural Resources Manager Val Carter-Stone to remove non-native, invasive cattail and phragmites. This will release the native wetland plants within the Fowles Marsh wetland complex. Water-proof boots are needed and some can be provided by contacting us before noon on the day of the session. Connect and learn how Medina County Parks District approaches watershed challenges and opportunities at this walk and talk. With Natural Resources Manager Jim Spetz, we will explore how watersheds function, the impacts of development and impervious surfaces on stormwater moving through the system. The role of native plants in the ecosystem, as well as the functional role they play in a healthy watershed will also be discussed. Join Naturalist Alex Palmer for a Wildflower Island stewardship workday. Discover the natural treasures of the hidden valley as we work to restore the landscape. We will be removing invasive plant species on the hillside that surrounds Canalway Center as we work to create an "island" of natural beauty. Bring work gloves and tools. Light refreshments provided. (M) Training: Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI)

Get a refresher course, or learn for the first time, about the BEHI assessment. Stream Restoration Ecologist Elizabeth Hiser will lead a training on how to assess streambank erosion using BEHI assessment methodology. BEHI looks at several streambank characteristics to determine the erosion potential: bank angle or undercutting, geologic layers, root structures within the bank, and more. A 2021 inventory discovered 70 standing trees out of the original 273 Moses Cleaveland Trees that were designated as descendants of the local prehistoric forest. Join Dr. Roy Larick to learn how these magnificent tree specimens (they are photogenic!) can provide insight into which big tree species grew where in natural Cleveland and how they can help us to grow a more natural urban canopy. Cleveland Metroparks removed the parking lot and performed soil rehabilitation to prepare this area to receive native plants. These trees will be around for future generations as a symbol that we care. We will be planting several large container trees. Dress for the weather and bring work gloves and drinking water. Tools (shovels and mallet) provided or bring your own. (Restoration; ???)

Come learn about the green infrastructure recently installed at Brookside Reservation in a parking lot adjacent to the zoo and the best practices for maintenance. Last year, WVP stewards planted different native plants in bioretention cells that will catch, hold, and clean stormwater, and release it slowly over time. You will see the progress made, what plants are doing the best, and learn first-hand the maintenance tasks needed to keep them fully functioning. Then, together, we will apply mulch to expand the impacts of this green infrastructure. (Restoration; 5. Applied 2-3 inches mulch to 4 bioswales and addressed tree maintenance.) | View photos here.

Additional Information
The Headwater Habitat Evaluation Index (HHEI) is a type of stream assessment used to evaluate small streams called primary headwater streams for physical and biological characteristics. The index uses three metrics to assign a score for the habitat quality for these streams. Learn these metrics and more with a WVP-hosted HHEI training course led by EnviroScience. Take part in the City Nature Challenge! Join Cleveland Metroparks Aquatic Research Coordinator, Claire Weldon to identify what is living in Chippewa Creek. Learn to seine (net) and identify the aquatic macroinvertebrates (insects) living in the river that are indicators of water quality. Prior to attending the event, volunteers should download the iNaturalist app from AppStore or Google Play on their phones and create an iNaturalist account. Talk: NEORSD Invests in Green Infrastructure and How YOU Can TOO*

This farm is going through a re-envisioning stage that includes infrastructure rehabilitation, establishing a site-wide apiary operation, native tree farm, native perennial establishment, and permaculture incubation efforts. We will discuss the array of partners that are coming together to bring this vision to reality, and will talk about ongoing need for volunteer assistance in the operation of this non-profit run farm. There is a new bug in town! In 2021, established populations of the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) were found in Cuyahoga County. Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive pest from Asia that feeds on a variety of plants including grapes, hops, and maple trees, posing a severe threat to forests and agriculture. SLF’s preferred host plant, tree-of-heaven (TOH), is a common invasive tree in Ohio. He is currently managing over 150 grant projects focusing on areas such as algal bloom science, fisheries, green infrastructure, dredging, crude oil transport, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. What is the Cuyahoga AOC? The lower 46.5 miles of the Cuyahoga River, including all the tributaries that drain to that section of river, and the adjacent Lake Erie shoreline and its direct tributaries, comprise the Cuyahoga River Area of Concern. The AOC begins at the head of the Gorge Dam pool in Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, ends at Lake Erie, and includes the shoreline from the western Cleveland border to Euclid Creek on the east.

Groundwater is one of the world's most important sources for freshwater. Join Cleveland Metroparks Community Science Assistant, Bre Turner, for a talk about the major uses and importance of groundwater. In this talk, volunteers will learn how various human-based activities such as pumping and pollution of groundwater can impact human health. Want to become better at identification of aquatic plants? Join Mark Warman, Cleveland Metroparks Aquatic Invasive Species Project Coordinator, to find out about the plants living in Ohio waters. This interactive session will look at the native, the rare, and the non-indigenous harmful species and leave you with tips to help native species thrive.
