Talk: Here Comes the Rain | Measuring Coastal Storm Vulnerability in NEO

Thu, Dec 2, 2-3 p.m. @ Online/ WebEx

The amount of rain falling in severe precipitation events has increased over the last 50 years. Climate scientists project that heavy rain events will continue to become more intense and frequent. These projections can have important implications for coastal zone management, land use planning and stormwater control. Join us as we talk with Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educator Scott Hardy, PhD on this topic. We will learn about the storm hazards vulnerability of 42 Northeast Ohio communities. Additionally, we will discuss strategies for mitigating increases in stormwater runoff, including a decision-support toolkit for coastal marinas to choose effective green infrastructure. This virtual talk will be recorded and made available on past event page, but join live to be part of the rich discussion that happens in the unrecorded Q &A. (Learning; 9) | View recording here. Monday MeetUp: 2021 Wrap Up Celebration

Mon, Dec 6, 6 - 7:30 p.m. @  Online/ WebEx

Thank you for taking a watershed stewardship journey with all of us as part of the Watershed Volunteer Program! Let's come together to celebrate our accomplishments. We will hear from various Cleveland Metroparks staff and watershed stewards about highlights and award the outstanding stewards of 2021. This will be a live virtual gathering via WedEx. Supplemental Event: Ohio State's Environmental Professionals Network // Restoring Streams and Wetlands- Whose Job Is It Anyway?

Tue, Dec 7, 7:15 - 9:30a.m. @ Online

Wetland development and stream restoration projects require biological knowledge of soil properties and hydrology as well as more earth-working and management skills. So, who is the lead on these types of projects? The scientist or the engineer? To dig into this question, learn how a professional wetland ecologist and an environmental engineer bring their unique skills and training to improve Ohio's wetlands and streams.  (Learning) | Register with the host here. WVP volunteers that attend can submit supplemental hours under (S:L) Conference/Symposium/Workshop/Webinar/Tour.

Supplemental Event: Native Plants, Phytoremediation & Green Infrastructure | How Native Plants Can Be Used to Improve Environmental Quality

Thu, Dec 9, 7 - 8 p.m. @ Online

Through this webinar, learn how native plants and phytoremediation can be used to improve soil, air and water quality by removing or transforming common environmental contaminants found in urban, suburban and rural settings. The concepts and species discussed in this presentation aren’t limited to green infrastructure or large-scale remediation projects: they can be applied to residential, commercial and municipal landscaping projects as well. Learn how to pay attention to surrounding land uses and activities to know how to select species for your next native plant project that will benefit the environment beyond providing habitat for pollinators and wildlife. Topics covered in this presentation will include rain gardens, stormwater management, pesticides, heavy metals, carbon sequestration, outdoor air quality and more.  (Learning) | Register with the host here. WVP volunteers that attend can submit supplemental hours under (S:L) Conference/Symposium/Workshop/Webinar/Tour.

Work Session: Seed Cleaning

Fri, Dec 10, 10 - 11:30 a.m. @ Watershed Stewardship Center, West Creek Reservation

Help clean native seeds collected by Cleveland Metroparks volunteers, so that they can be used in future restoration projects throughout the parks. This will be held indoors and masks are required to be worn the whole time. (Restoration; 6)

Talk: Water Quality Monitoring on a Watershed Scale | Nonpoint Nutrient Sources and Implication Management

Mon, Dec 13, 6 - 7 p.m. @ Online/ WebEx

Join MaryAnne Hejna, WVP monitor and Watershed Resources Engineer, to hear about her monitoring research within the Euclid Creek Watershed.  This presentation will summarize water chemistry results from a year-long study conducted throughout Euclid Creek. Research highlights will show that water quality monitoring can be a low-cost and effective planning tool to optimize pollution reduction on a watershed scale. This virtual talk will be recorded and made available on past event page, but join live to be part of the rich discussion that happens in the unrecorded Q &A. (Learning;27) | View recording here.

Orientation: LinkUp with Watershed Volunteer Program*
