In TY25, training will be a mix of in-person and online training.
Training for new tax counselors will consist of 5-6 days of instructor-led, in-person training.
Training for experienced counselors will consist of meeting certification requirements by completing the IRS tests including the Advanced Tax Test, preparing exercises from the workbook, and LMS policy and technology training modules. A variety of refresher training modes are available, including virtual sessions on basic, advanced, and Virginia and other state tax laws; and NTTC materials including videos, papers, and a training manual. There will be separate in-person classes for intermediate counselors, as well as some focused meetings for experienced tax preparers who are transferring their preexisting tax preparation skills to Tax-Aide.
Training for Client Facilitators will consist of meeting certification requirements by completing the Standards of Conduct and Intake/Interview and Quality Review IRS tests, and LMS policy and technology training modules. New client facilitators must attend an instructor-led, in-person training, and experienced client facilitators are strongly encouraged to attend as well.
Security is a primary concern for our program, our sites, our clients and ourselves. During recent tax seasons there have been computer attacks directed at both individual taxpayers and tax preparers. Hacking tools and the instructions for their use are now widely available on the internet.
Because of these threats and their potential impact on our clients and on the program as a whole, there are strict program, counselor, and site policies that must be followed. You will be agreeing to those policies when you complete and sign the Volunteer Agreement to join our program.
Be sure to read and understand these security policies before completing your Volunteer Agreement.
In the event of snow, we will generally follow Fairfax County Government. If Fairfax County Government is closed, we will reschedule the class. Please check your email for updates during inclement weather.
The same rules generally apply to tax counseling days, unless your Local Coordinator has modified the rule based on the specific site you are supporting. Please check with your Local Coordinator about this policy once you are on site. In any event, do not travel if you are uncomfortable with the road conditions in your area.
