Workstation can't find printer

Clean up your Chromebook's profile:

• At the bottom right, select the time, then click Sign out.  

• When you sign back in, the printers should be available.

Brother stops printing in the middle of a return

When the Brother printer thinks the toner is out, it will come to a stop -- sometimes in the middle of a return.  You need to set it to "CONTINUE" to enable you to change the toner at a later time.

When you change the cartridge, the printer will revert to "STOP" -- so you must reset the settings to "CONTINUE" the next time the toner gets low:

• Press the up arrow until the display shows "General Setup" -- Press OK.

• Press the up arrow until the display shows "Replace Toner" -- Press OK.

• Press the up arrow until the display shows "Continue" -- Press OK.

• After 20 or 30 seconds the display will revert to "Sleep," and you're done.  

White Screen

Help! My screen has gone white. What do I do?

Try clearing your browsing data:

• Press CTRL-H, then:

  • • Choose the Clear browsing data menu 

    • Check the box next to  Browsing History.   Uncheck other boxes.

    • Click the Clear Data button on the bottom right corner of the Clear browsing data window. 

If that doesn't work, you need to restart your browser: 

• Choose the "X" at the upper right corner of the display.  

• Reopen Chrome (far left icon in the tray at the bottom of the screen.)

 TaxSlayer is working on this but having hard time reproducing the problem. Possibly related to timeouts. (2/11/2020)

Help! My Chromebook has slowed to a crawl for no apparent reason -- everyone else at my site seems to be working fine. 

Try clearing out your user profile:

• At the bottom right, select the time, then click Sign out.  

• On the Chromebook sign-in screen, select your profile

• Next to your profile name, select the Down arrow .

• Select Remove this user.

• In the box that appears, select Remove this user.

Help! I lost my tab -- how do I get it back?

• If you close a tab by mistake, you can use the three menu dots in the upper right corner of the screen (Chrome settings), then click History, and then click the recently closed tab. 

• If you overwrite a tab by mistake, press the backspace key 

• For the future - Always press Save button in Tax Slayer before leaving the screen.

How do I get a new tab or a new window?

• Open a new tab - Press CTRL + T

• Open a new window -  Press CTRL + N

How do I move between different windows?

• Click on the Show windows button on your keyboard (a little box with 2 vertical lines to the right located just above the #6 key), then choose any window.

• OR repeatedly press ALT-TAB to switch between open windows.

How do I bookmark important links and documents?

To bookmark a page:

• Go to the page you want to bookmark, then click on the padlock in the address bar and drag it down to the bookmark bar.

• OR, to the right of the address bar, click the Star  

To bookmark a document:

• If you opened the document by clicking a link (like Form 1040 PDF)

  • • Click the Download arrow and select the Save button

    • When it finishes downloading, select "Show In Folder" to see the documents in your Google Drive

    • Drag the desired document to the Bookmark Bar.

What should I bookmark?

• • Note:  The Modified IRS Pub 4012 is now located in each user's Google Drive account. It is located in the “Share Drives” folder.

  • You can access your Google Drive from the TaxAide list of bookmarks, or by clicking the Search button and typing "Drive"

Where do I find all the shortcuts?

•  Click the Search button (or the little circle at the bottom left of your Chromebook screen.) Type “short” in the search bar, then click on the icon labeled Shortcuts.

Where is My Drive and what can I do with it?

• Files you download are saved to YOUR Google Drive which is associated with your TaxAide Chromebook account. You can create Google docs and sheets and save them. The files will remain for this tax season, but we expect them to be wiped out at the end of the season.

• Your Google Drive has been bookmarked in the TaxAide bookmark group.

• It can also be found at: https://drive.google.com

How can I change the display font size?

• Click on the time in the lower right corner, then the “settings” gear symbol; open Device → Displays 

• At the bottom of the screen, slide the “Display Size” bar to the desired size, such as 130%. This setting will stick until you change it again. 

Am I allowed to have Chrome save my passwords?

• The “Offer to save passwords” setting in Chrome is pre-set to ON. This is approved by the Tax-Aide program. 

How do I use the touchpad?

• Tap to click

• ALT-Tap OR tap two fingers to right-click

• Slide two fingers to scroll

I mostly use a mouse, is the touchpad useful to me?

• Sometimes it is hard to see and use  the scroll bar on the right side of your screen.  You can use your touchpad to scroll:

  • • Make sure you have activated the window you are looking at

    • Scroll up and down using two fingers on the touchpad
