How to Join the Irvington Band

In order to successfully join the Irvington Band, Orchestra or Color Guard Programs, please make sure to go through the following steps:

Step 1:  Register during Irvington Course Enrollment - Spring

• When: During IHS Course Enrollment in spring

• Find the band classes from the catalog and add to your course requests on Infinite Campus Portal

• Marching Band & Color Guard is scheduled in Period 7

• Jazz Band is scheduled in Zero Period (marked as Period 10)

• For Period 1~6, the band programs offered include Symphonic Band, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.

• For Wind Ensemble I & II, auditions in spring are required.

• For Marching Band and Color Guard, your JV/V division will be evaluated and assigned by coaches.

Step 2: Complete the Band Program Annual SignUp on Google Form - Summer

• When: The signup notice is usually announced by 5/31 and due 7/15. 

• Band Program Annual Signup is a required process  for ALL students each year. It is used for compiling rosters by instruments & levels, creating a full contact list for communications with all parents & students, and for collecting annual donations to support the Programs. **It DOES NOT replace your course enrollment at IHS; you must verify your course schedule on the Maze Day and on the Infinite Campus Student Portal.  

• The suggested annual donation is $450 for the school year of 2024-25 which covers the coaches salaries, transportations (buses and trucks), uniform maintenance & dry cleaning,  competition entry fees, concert hall rentals, music sheets, food supplies for band review trips, and much more. 

• Whether or not you donate, you MUST SIGN UP on Google Form by July 15th. 

Step 3: Participate in the Mandatory Band Camp - Summer

• When: Near the end of July and the beginning of August

• Who: It is required for all students who have registered for Marching Band and Color Guard, including returning students, incoming Freshmen and students transferring to IHS. Please make sure to save the weeks for Band Camp when you plan on vacations. 

• Students will learn the very basics and most importantly, get their uniforms fitted!  In case you missed the uniform fitting, you must notify Mr Rodda in advance and make arrangements with our Uniform Coordinator for makeup. 

• If you are only taking a Band or Orchestra without a separate Marching Band or Color Guard class on Period 7, you do NOT need to come to the above camps, but you still need to complete the Google Form Signup. 

Step 4: Review the Class Schedule on Maze Day

• When: Maze Day

• Please verify all the band programs you requested are listed correctly on your schedule, including anything in Period 1~6, Period 7, and/or Period 10 (for Period 0).

• If anything is missing or wrong, please contact your counselor and Mr Rodda immediately to get it fixed.

• Please make sure to double check your finalized schedule on Infinite Campus Student Portal.

Step 5: Complete the Dual Enrollment if Eligible

• For incoming 9th grade, dual enrollment is processed after the school starts. 

• For 10~12th grades, dual enrollment is usually processed in May and done before Summer.

• The band programs eligible for Dual Enrollment may change each year. Please refer to the notice from IHS for an updated list and policy. 

Step 6: Submit the Field Trip Forms

• Students must pick up and turn in a set of Field Trip Forms with parents' signatures on all pages, in order to perform at band reviews and concerts.

• If you have already made the suggested donations during annual signup, you don't need to donate the bus fees again.

• If you have not made the suggested donations, please send a check payable to "IHS Band" to cover the bus fees and return it with the Field Trip Forms. 

Step 7: Missed the Band Program Annual SignUp and/or the Band Camp?

• If you are a new student transferring to IHS, or a returning student who missed the Band Program Annual SignUp and/or the Band Camp, please make sure to go through the following steps:

  • Fill out the Google Form as a late signup. We accept late signup until the Labor Day weekend, so you should try to do it as soon as you are confirmed to join the band programs. 

  • Contact IHSVikingsMusicBoosters@gmail.com to update your contact info on the Main Roster

  • Contact the uniform coordinator at IHSVikingsMusicBoosters@gmail.com to get your uniform fitting scheduled asap

  • Contact the Coaches of Marching Band or Color Guard to get your information updated 

  • Purchase Marching Shoes (Marching band only) and/or other necessary accessories

Step 8: Stay Connected with your group

• Subscribe to Band Email Notifications via MailChimp to receive email notifications from IHSVikingsMusicBoosters@gmail.com. 

• If you are having trouble receiving our email, please double check your Junk Mail folder or "Promotional" folder, and mark the email of IHSVikingsMusicBoosters@gmail.com as a SAFE sender.

• Join the private Facebook Group of "Irvington HS Band, Marching Band and Guard". Both students and parents are welcome. 

• For Color Guard Only, please join the "IHS Color Guard" group on the BAND APP: https://band.us/n/aba87eT879PbS

• For everyone, please feel free to join the WhatsApp Group and/or Wechat Group (email us to get linked)

Step 9: Verify your Grades/Credits on Transcripts

• It is rare but unfortunate that your band program grades and/or credits could be missing on the report cards or transcripts. 

• Please make sure to check your records on Infinite Campus Student Portal at least once in a quarter to identify issues, and contact your counselor and Mr Rodda immediately to get them fixed. 

• Don't wait until your senior year when you realize that you missed the record of an entire year of Marching/Guard that cannot be made up.
