Sierra Trading Post is an internet shopping portal that features outdoor gear. But it also has retail outlets. Like Colorado, Vermont is an outdoorsy kind of place. So it probably makes business sense to locate the first Sierra Trading Post in the east in Vermont, which it did in November 2015. The second store in the east opened in Danbury, Connecticut a year later in November 2016.
Sierra Trading Post started in Sparks, Nevada in 1986 as a catalog retailer and opened its first brick-and-mortar store at the same location in 1990. In 1998 it became one of the first catalog companies to go online. It currently has retail stores in Wyoming, Colorado and Nevada. In 2012, Sierra Trading Post was purchased by TJX Companies, Inc., which owns TJ Maxx and Marshalls. The decision to open a store in South Burlington (right next to a TJ Maxx) may have been influenced by the fact that TJX is headquartered in nearby suburban Boston.
