For many years, Vermont was the only state without a Target store. Target tried to build a store in Williston in 2012 but were rebuffed by city fathers who just did not want another big box retailer in their midst.

Then, in October 2017 Target announced it would build a small format store in the University Mall in South Burlington. The store is expected to open in the Fall of 2018, just in time for the Christmans shopping season.
Before that, Target had 1799 stores in the 49 other states—including out of the way places like Alaska (which has three) and Hawaii (which has four) and even the tiny District of Columbia. Even Wyoming, the least populated state, has two Targets. And tiny Road Island has four. Only Vermont had zero. Until Fall 2017, a visit to the Target website stated: “Currently, there are no Target stores in Vermont.” http://www.target.com/store-locator/state-listing
