According to Statemaster.com, Montpelier is by far the smallest capital city with a population of only 8,035. Pierre, South Dakota is second with a population of 13,876—slightly less than double—and Juneau, Alaska has 31,118—almost four times Montpelier’s population.
At the other end of the ranking, Baton Rouge has nearly a quarter million people. Boston has more than 500,000 and Columbus comes in at almost three-quarters of a million residents.
