Vermont is not very diverse. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey, 93.2 percent of Vermonters are “non-Hispanic whites.” That is the second highest white percentage in the nation. New Hampshire is first and Maine is third. Northern New England is a very white place.
Hawaii, in contrast, is the least white place with only 22.9 percent “non-Hispanic whites.”
There are not many Asians in Vermont either According to Census.gov/quickfacts, only 1.6 percent of Vermont’s are Asian versus 5.4 percent for the nation as a whole.
Likewise, Blacks make up only 1.2 percent of Vermont’s population versus 13.2 percent for the nation.
Nor are there many Hispanics. Only 1.8 percent of the state’s population is Hispanic versus 17.4 percent for the nation.
The same picture emerges when it comes to the “foreign born.” Only 4.2 percent of the population states they are that versus 13.1 percent overall.
