All events will be held entirely in Portuguese (with the exception of the information booths from universities). Judging will be done by Portuguese faculty from various universities and by volunteer Portuguese students from the University of Utah. Click on the name of each event for additional information.
Note: Unless otherwise indicated, students will be admitted one at a time to each event. Students may invite friends and family to observe them, but these events will not be open to the general public.
Eventos para alunos individuais / Events for individual students
In order to avoid making students present in front of their classmates, for the events below, only one student will be admitted to the room at a time (along with any invited family or friends).
Discursos Preparados / Prepared Talks: O aluno prepara um discurso original de 2,5 a 3 minutos, apresentado de memória sem anotações, sobre um assunto que o aluno seleciona de uma lista de temas retirados dos currículos Bridge e DLI 6. / The student prepares an original talk of 2½ to 3 minutes, presented from memory without notes, on a subject that the student selects from a list of topics taken from Bridge and DLI 6 curricula.
Discursos Improvisados / Impromptu Talks: O aluno tira um cartão especificando um tópico de uma lista de temas retirados dos currículos Bridge e DLI 6. O aluno tem três minutos para formular ideias e depois fala espontaneamente de 2 a 5 minutos sobre aquele tema. / The student draws a card specifying a topic from a list of subjects taken from Bridge and DLI 6 curricula. The student has three minutes to formulate ideas, and then talks spontaneously from 2 to 5 minutes about that topic.
Histórias Engraçadas / Humorous Stories: O aluno conta de memória uma história engraçada de 1 a 2 minutos. A história não precisa ser original. / The student tells a 1-2 minute humorous story from memory. The story need not be original.
Mostre e Fale / Show and Tell: O aluno traz um objeto, seja de uma cultura de língua portuguesa ou criado pelo aluno, e fala sobre o objeto durante 2 a 3 minutos sem usar notas. / The student brings an object, either from a Portuguese-speaking culture or created by the student, and tells about the object for 2-3 minutes without using notes.
Declamação de Poesia / Poetry Recitation: O aluno recita de memória um poema de um poeta de língua portuguesa, escolhido de uma lista de poemas fornecidos (alguns dos quais foram estudados nas aulas). / The student recites from memory a poem by a Portuguese-speaking poet, chosen from a list of poems provided (some of which have been studied in class).
Karaokê: O aluno escolhe uma música apropriada em português e canta de 1 a 2 minutos da música no estilo karaokê com acompanhamento gravado. / The student chooses an appropriate song in Portuguese and performs 1-2 minutes of the song with recorded accompaniment, karaoke style.
Eventos para grupos de alunos / Events for groups of students
Conversas Improvisadas / Impromptu Conversations: Os alunos inscrevem-se em duplas. Cada dupla seleciona aleatoriamente uma situação de um baralho de cartas. A dupla tem cinco minutos para preparar uma conversa com base naquela situação e depois a representa em português, tentando falar por pelo menos um minuto. / Students sign up in pairs. Each pair randomly selects a situation from a deck of cards. The pair has five minutes to prepare a conversation based on that situation and then acts it out in Portuguese, attempting to talk for at least one minute.
Esquetes / Skits: O elenco de um esquete pode variar de 2 a 6 alunos. O grupo apresenta o esquete em português, com duração não superior a 10 minutos, com figurinos e adereços simples. O esquete não precisa ser original. Este evento é aberto ao público. Os jurados selecionarão o melhor esquete a ser apresentado durante a cerimônia de premiação. / The cast of a skit may range from 2-6 students. The group presents the skit in Portuguese, not to exceed 10 minutes, with simple costumes and props. The skit need not be original. This event is open to the public. Judges will select the best skit to be performed during the awards ceremony.
Performance Musical: Para grupos de um a quatro alunos. Os alunos apresentam um número musical ao vivo com acompanhamento instrumental (os instrumentos devem ser trazidos pelos alunos). As letras das músicas devem ser memorizadas. Crédito extra para composições originais. Este evento é aberto ao público. Os jurados selecionarão a melhor música a ser apresentada durante a cerimônia de premiação. / For groups of one to four students. Students perform a live musical number with instrumental accompaniment (instruments must be brought by students). Song lyrics must be memorized. Extra credit for original compositions. This event is open to the public. Judges will select the best musical number to be performed during the awards ceremony.
Copa de Português / Portuguese Bowl: Cada escola inscreverá um time de 5 alunos (os alunos que falam português como primeira língua não podem participar deste evento). Os times competem para responder questões sobre gramática, vocabulário e cultura. A competição será um torneio de eliminação única, com um troféu entregue ao time vencedor na cerimônia de premiação. Este evento é aberto ao público. / Each school will enter one team of 5 students (students who speak Portuguese as a first language may not participate in this event). The teams compete to answer questions about Portuguese grammar, vocabulary, and culture. The competition will be a single-elimination tournament, with a trophy awarded to the winning team in the awards ceremony. This event is open to the public.
Evento adicional em 2026
Memorial para um herói indígena ou afro-brasileiro / Memorial to an Indigenous or Afro-Brazilian hero: Cada escola está convidada a enviar cinco dos seus melhores projetos da Unidade 2 (um memorial para um herói indígena ou afro-brasileiro). Esses projetos serão expostos em uma sala reservada para esse fim, que estará aberta à visitação durante os eventos. Assim como nos demais eventos, cada projeto receberá uma avaliação que será levada em conta na premiação geral. / Each school is invited to submit five of their best student projects from Unit 2 (a memorial to an Indigenous or Afro-Brazilian hero). These projects will be displayed in a room set aside for this purpose, which will be open for viewing throughout the events. Like the other events, each project will be assigned a rating which will factor into the overall school awards.
