1. Students will perform individually.
2. The humorous story should be approximately one to two minutes in length; a penalty may be assessed if shorter than one minute or longer than three. Stories do not need to be original; they may be taken or adapted from sources in Portuguese (or in English, translated to Portuguese).
3. The story is NOT to be read nor are notes to be used.
4. Students will be judged on:
content (originality and humor of the story)
presentation (projection; ability to deliver punch line)
fluency (absence of hesitations)
linguistic accuracy (pronunciation)
adherence to time limit
SUGGESTIONS:
Obviously the challenge is in finding humorous stores of the right length—neither too short (such as riddles) nor too long—and stories that are “clean” enough for students. Many stories can be found online by searching for combinations of terms such as histórias engraçadas or anedotas para rir (the term “anedotas” is commonly used in Portugal). EXEMPLO:
Quatro mulheres idosas estão viajando em um carro a 40 quilômetros por hora. Porém, durante o percurso, um guarda para o veículo e, após conferir os documentos, dá um sermão na senhora dirigindo o carro:
—Senhora, nesta estrada, a velocidade máxima é 120 quilômetros por hora e a mínima é 90! Andar abaixo do limite é tão perigoso quanto exceder a velocidade!
Cheia de razão, a senhora aponta para uma placa:
—O senhor não está vendo a indicação de 40 quilômetros por hora na placa?
O guarda, responde surpreso:
—Senhora ... isso não é uma placa de indicação de velocidade. É a identificação da estrada: SP-40!
A senhora responde:
—Ah, que alívio! Isso explica o pânico das minhas amigas quando estávamos na SP-180.
