Tibicen canicularis
The Hopi Tribe (a sovereign nation located in northeastern Arizona) commonly refers to the flute player as "maahu," meaning "the cicada." The cicada's buzzing sound and long proboscis call to mind the sound of the leena (flute) and its shape. As maahu buzz louder on hot days the Hopi people refer to the maahu's buzzing as a calling in the warm weather. The Hopi people believe that the maahu bring warmth and with it fertility for their crops. - Ekkehart Malotki, Kokopelli: The Making of an Icon (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2000)
