Homo sapiens
Genetic sequencing has confirmed Africa as the birthplace of the modern human species. By studying genetic variation, we find most human diversity within Africa. The "Out of Africa" model suggests a small group left, leading to a genetic bottleneck. A genetic bottleneck occurs when a population undergoes a swift decline leading to lower genetic diversity. This can happen for many reasons from earthquakes and disease to genocide and war. An important note is that the exact time and number of groups that left Africa is still debated.- Genetic studies reveal diversity of early human populations – and pin down when we left Africa
