Forests scorched in a withering inferno of fire, glaciers thawing into rivers throughout the valley, sea levels surging destroying local coasts... These tragic events are being caused by human activity all throughout the world. Even some of the most isolated places around the world are having drastic changes due to climate change. Every year climate change is getting worse and worse. New records are being broken for some of the most hottest days. Wildlife and people living in poverty are fighting for survival in this rapidly changing environment.
Climate change is caused by a high level of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in our atmosphere. If too much carbon dioxide ends up in our atmosphere, it will result in a green house gas effect, which will be impossible to reverse. If a greenhouse gas effect is caused, it can result in 2 different outcomes:
A global winter that is colder then antarctic, that last for hundreds of years!!!
Earth heats up so much that everything burns.
Climate change affects weather, wildlife, the oceans, agriculture, coastal erosion and a whole lot more that we have not yet discovered.
How is weather effected by climate change?
Climate change is affecting weather patterns and causing more violent weather events such as cyclones, wildfires, flash floods, drought and tornadoes. Due to inconsistent weather patterns, destructive events can be very hard to predict. As a result it can severely affect wildlife and their habitats.
How is wildlife affected by climate change?
Climate change is majorly affecting wildlife all around the world because of water shortages, loss of habitat and intense storms. Wildlife now have to migrate to different, unfamiliar areas just to access water. This can cause more competition between wildlife in the fight for survival. It can even affect animals from some of the most remote part of this world such as Antarctica.
How are the oceans effected by climate change?
Climate change is drastically affecting the oceans and the life they inhabit. It is causing oceans to rise because of the thawing icecaps. It is even causing the oceans to become more acidic because the oceans act as a carbon drain. The affects of the oceans' acidity rising can majorly affect the marine life as well as us humans. It can cause the coral to die which can affect the fish who live within it. Since most of earth oxygen comes from the ocean; If coral die, we would die with them. Coastal erosion would also be severe, because coral helps the waves stay to a minimum.
Ocean pollution has been a rising issue in our modern world today. Toxic chemicals and rubbish are now invading our oceans that haven't been touched for millions of years. This is posing a serious risk not just for the ocean's environment and fish but also for us humans. Plastic pollutants that have ended up in the ocean are being mistaken for food which the fish are eating. This can cause a major decrease in fish populations, affecting the food chain.
When we catch fish in the ocean they could have ingested rubbish which, when we go and eat the fish, we will be ingesting that same rubbish that the fish consumed. This is highly dangerous and can be life threatening to us humans.
Dangerous chemicals that end up in ocean can cause a mass wipeout of fish in that area. It can also be dangerous for humans because we wouldn't know if there were dangerous chemicals in the oceans water. The chemicals can cause algae and other sea plants to die lowering the oceans population.
Some examples of things that pollutes the ocean:
Rubbish
straws
Plastic bags
lids
Forks, Knifes, Spoons
Food wrappings
Plastic water bottles
Chemicals
Fertilizer
Pesticides
herbicides
Oil
Sewerage
Every second, animal habitats are getting smaller, pushing animals closer together. Thousands of acres of forest are being destroyed ever hour. Forests are being stripped for resources. This is a serious issue, because forests not only provide us with animals and insects but also with medicine and food.
You may be wondering, why are forests being destroyed? Well the main reason why deforestation is happening is because of agriculture, construction materials and fossil fuel mining.
Facts on deforestation:
About 20% of the world's oxygen comes from the Amazon rain forest
Deforestation has caused and or contributed to erosion, climate change, floods and even raging wildfires.
The #1 leading cause of deforestation is caused by agriculture.
Tropical rain forest contain more then half of all the worlds species.
Tropical rain forests cover 6-7% of the world.
every second 1 1/2 acres of forest is being cut down every single second.
At the rate deforestation is going; within 100 years all of the worlds forests would be completely gone!!!
Half of the worlds tropical forests have been destroyed due to deforestation.
Deforestation is the #1 leading cause of habitat loss in the world.
Being sustainable would not only help by preventing these issues occurring, but would also make the world a better place. By being sustainable you are not only reducing your carbon footprint but also becoming eco-friendly. By being sustainable, you have acknowledged that these issues are present and are willing to help save the planet. Being sustainable such as recycling properly can reduce ocean pollution, climate change and also reduce the rate of deforestation. If we don't make a change now within the next 50 year there may be no turning back.
