This week in Kindergarten, we spent time getting to know each other. We talked about the role of a school counselor and used Mrs. Potato Head as a visual, to discuss the parts of a good school counselor. (eyes are for watching the students and making sure they're having a good day, ears are for listening, arms are for hugging, giving high fives, helping, etc.) We also watched a "Welcome to Kindergarten" video and "The Wondergrove Kids: Understanding the School Rules" and discussed what to expect this year, why we have rules, and how to make good choices every day.
This week in Kindergarten, we spent time getting to know each other. This week, we spent more time getting to know each other and revisited some of the Unionville school rules and expectations. We watched Howard B. Wigglebottom: Learns to Listen and discussed the choices Howard made at school, how he felt once he was reprimanded, and how he decided to "turn his day around" and start listening - which enabled him to have a GREAT day at school.

This week, we focused on the character trait DETERMINATION and not giving up. We talked about lightening bugs and looked at pictures and watched a video of them lighting up the night sky. We imagined that lighting bugs have to learn how to make their lights shine, just like we have to learn to walk and talk...and how these things aren't easy to do - but with determination and by continuing to try - we can do it! We read the book Leo The Lightening Bug which is about a lightening bug who can't seem to get his light to shine. He experiences sadness, embarrassment, anger, and finally JOY as he continues to work at it. The students related to Leo as they shared things that they are currently working on.

This week in Kindergarten, we focused on friendship skills. We watched a video on Friendship Soup and had a great discussion on what the "ingredients" are for a great friendship. (having fun, safety, trust, kindness). Then we read the book Enemy Pie. The kids loved this story! It's about a new kid in town who is immediately put on the "enemy list".... the dad offers to make his special Enemy Pie to help with getting rid of the enemy - but the catch is that the two boys must spend the entire day together first! I loved seeing the "lightbulb" moment when the students realized that when the boys spent time together and got to know one another - they became friends!

We listened to the song "Try a Little Kindness" and brainstormed the many ways that we can show kindness at home, at school, in our communities, etc. Then we read the book Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch. This is such a sweet story that shows how even an anonymous Valentine can change someone's world and make them feel special. In closing, the students told me ideas they had for showing kindness this week.

Our focus for this lesson was self-esteem and acceptance. We talked about how we are all different and special in our own ways. The students shared things that are unique about themselves, but we also talked about what we all have in common: our feelings, our hearts, etc and how important it is to show kindness and respect to each other. We read The Okay Book, as well as the Story of Ferninand. The kids loved this book! And who knew that the Story of Ferdinand was also a Disney cartoon from 1938? It's an endearing story about a big strong bull who is peaceful and loves nothing better than sitting under his favorite tree, smelling flowers.

We read the book What if Everybody Did That? and discussed each scenario. We also watched the Wondergroves Kids "Putting My Toys Away" and sang along to the catchy song "Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be Respectful".
