An Upstander is somebody who takes action to support people who are experiencing harm or bias. Upstanders help by intervening when they see instances of harm or bias.
The Be An Upstander campaign empowers students with tools to intervene in instances of bias and harm on and off campus. The Be An Upstander curriculum is taught to sophomores in their world history classes and it supports students in intervening by using the strategies of Direct, Delegate and Distract.
Why do we need Upstanders?
Harm & Bias exists in our schools. 37% of TUHSD 9th graders reported experiencing some kind of harassment or bullying. 30% of TUHSD 11th graders have had sexual jokes, comments or gestures made at them. Everyone has a right to be safe, and we all play a role in keeping each other safe by intervening and supporting each other when we witness harm or bias happening.
