Many years ago, the fastest way to cross the frozen Alaskan wilderness was by way of dogs and sleds. Scouting honors the tradition with an annual team competition called the Klondike Derby.
The Derby follows a 3 to 5-mile long woodland course visiting various Alaskan "towns". What challenges face the Scouts in each town? They don't know! But they'll earn gold "nuggets" in each town by demonstrating Scout skills such as Camping Skills, First Aid, Pioneering, Map-and-Compass, and Nature/Scoutcraft. Each town is run by a Mayor who assists and evaluates the patrol as they solve their problem.
The Derby is also a race – total time around the course also counts for additional “gold” nuggets. The Patrols that earn the most nuggets in the quickest time win!
The Patrols are divided into Scout (Junior) and Venture (Senior) divisions based on average age and ranks.
Sleds are built by the Scouts and use skis if there is adequate snow, or wheels if the ground is bare. The Scouts never know exactly what kind of weather to expect in Virginia in February. Each sled is loaded with the gear needed for the competitions, plus lunch, drinks, and other supplies. The Scouts use long ropes to pull their sleds – similar to dog-teams in the days of the real Klondike. Most importantly, the Patrols do not have adult escorts – they are on their own from start to finish.
When the patrol completes the course, scores are calculated by the mayor. A combination of gold nuggets and time determines the score.
In addition to the patrol competition, the Klondike Derby offers the Scouts an opportunity to camp overnight. Adults may choose to support one of the towns in the competition.
