The phonics scheme we use at Two Moors is 'Read Write Inc.' This is a systematic synthetic phonics scheme that teaches phonics progressively through different 'sets' of sounds. This starts with our very youngest children in our nursery and continues until children have developed a strong foundation in phonics, which is essential for future reading and writing. Children will become confident in blending sounds into words and will be able to read words accurately. This level of phonics knowledge is crucial for reading fluency and comprehension. The Read Write Inc. programme also supports spelling development, helping children to understand the relationship between sounds and their spellings.
Children who have completed Read Write Inc. Phonics are typically ready to move on to the next level, which may include more complex reading and writing tasks. The program provides a structured progression through different levels, ensuring that children progress at their own pace and build a solid base in phonics before advancing to more complex tasks.
Parental involvement:
Parent/Carer workshops are offered at the start of the Reception Year with the view to sharing our practices in order for families to best support their children at home with their phonics learning.
Ready Steady Read:
Alongside R,W,I, the Rotary Club of Tiverton support us in providing the Ready Steady Read Programme. This is a targeted reading support intervention which children work 1:1 on a tailored programme which supports their reading learning.
Structure and assessment of phonics:
Children in Nursery formally begin Read, Write, Inc. in the summer term of N2. Learning the foundational skills of phonics required for school readiness enables the children to be set up for success as they start Reception.
The focus in nursery is on developing children's vocabulary through nursery rhymes, songs, stories and other planned talk.
In Reception, by the first half term, children are assessed on their phonics knowledge and grouped into the appropriate level in order to best meet their learning needs.
Phonics is taught daily throughout Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 with children being taught the fundamental skills in order for them to be able to read fluently by the time they are in Year 2.
The children are grouped by progress for targeted learning with constant assessment to ensure they are learning the correct set of phonics.
Alongside the Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme, children build foundational skills through developing reading fluency and comprehension, spelling and writing with confidence and learn to articulate their ideas and understanding.
When the children reach the end of Year 1, they complete a statutory Phonics Screening Check. This is a list of 40 words that the children have to read to their teacher. The results of this get sent home to families so they know how well their children have done. Children who do not reach an 'expected standard' (normally 32/40), get the opportunity to retake the Check at the end of Year 2, after continuing to receive phonics teaching and support throughout that year.
