Personal development is about extending our curriculum beyond just the academic and providing opportunities for developing pupil's broader development. We aim to provide high quality opportunities to enhance pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development whilst developing wider work to support pupils to be confident, resilient and independent, and to develop strength of character. We ensure all children are given the opportunity to partake in these rich experiences, but specifically ensure our disadvantaged pupils consistently benefit from these. We believe our extra-curricular offer considerably strengthen what Two Moors Primary School offers our children. Read on to discover more about the Personal Development at our school...

Number day - the children celebrated number day by raising money for the NSPCC and completing maths related activities throughout the day
Other charity days - at the end of each half term, school has a non-uniform day to raise money for different charities. These charities are nominated by any member of the school. This year, we had parent nominations and school council decisions. Charities included: Osborne Trust and the RNLI.
Throughout the year, we have worked closely with lots of our local schools including: Tiverton High School, Blundell's School and Castle Primary. Read on to find out more about what we have been doing with them!
Blundell's School:
Blundell's have been amazing in working with us this year. At the start of the year they sent a group of sixth form children to help clear and sort our forest school and garden area in a morning and then support some children in the afternoon playing sports games.
Following this, there has been a mix of activity days and sports days at Blundell's. Year 1 visited at Christmas time for a morning of festive activities; Year 5 visited in the autumn for a garden bird activity day; Year 6 visited in the Spring for a WWII themed activity day and also revisited soon after that as they were invited to watch the performance of Around The World In 80 Days. In the summer term, Year 5 took part in a basketball tournament led by the sports' leaders.
Again, at the start of 24/25, they sent a working part to us to help around our grounds!
Tiverton High School:
Throughout the year, there has been a range of sporting events held at the high school with local schools. We have taken children from across our school to take part in tennis, handball, girls' and boys' football, multiskills, tag rugby and athletics.
Castle Primary School:
Some of our Year Three children took part in a maths project with local primary schools at Castle Primary, this year. The children enjoyed visiting the school and taking part and getting to know other children.
Throughout the year, numerous visitors have come to school to help the children learn and experience different things...read on to find out more about some of these...
Author visits:
Anne Parsons, a local - Tiverton based - author, visited school to show off her new book, read extracts of it to the children and teach some children how the creative writing process works! The children were so engaged and engrossed, many left buying her book and saying they wanted to be authors!
Sea Dream:
Dr Juliette Jackson, a Marine Biologist, with the help of governor Chris Berry, organised a day of fun and learning about the ocean, animals, pollution and more!
Stone Age Story Tellers:
Year Five were treated to a stone-age story-teller who taught the children all about life in the stone age.
Sciencedipity Workshop:
Children were treated to amazing science investigations in the hall - there were explosions, noises and a lot of learning!
A Taste Of Medicine:
Year Five were visited by local GPs who talked to them about medicine, drugs, doctors, hospitals etc. The children really enjoyed their learning and had lots of questions!
Tiverton Library:
Earlier on in the year, visitors from Tiverton library came to Nursery to share some of their favourite stories with the children and their adults. Towards the end of the year, Pikachu(!) came to school and introduced the children to the Summer reading challenge!
Parliament Assembly:
A member of parliament's education team came to visit the Exmoor chidlren and presented an assembly on all things democracy, parliament, government and politics! There were so many good questions from the children who showed a real interest throughout.
Welsh Brass Band:
Year Six, annualy, create and perform a wonderful remembrance service. Firstly to the school, and then to their parents. Poetry and readings and intertwined throughout the always-moving and emotional service.
The music tuition offer in our school is amazing! Our children can choose to currently learn the piano, ukulele, drums or guitar. At the end of the year, the children who have been having extra music tuition put on a series of concerts to their parents and it is always a lovely event!
We also have a school choir and school band! The choir this year sung at various PTFA events, the local residential care home, Tiverton hospital as well as at the local market!
The choir, this year, have also sung at Exeter Cathedral - what a special experience to have!
If you want to be involved in any music tuition, enquire at the office!
The school takes part in the Tiverton Nativity Trail organised by the local church. This year, a group of children created a scene of shepherds and sheep!
As well as this, Nursery invite their parents in for a christmas actitivty afternoon, Reception perform a nativity, Year 1 put on a show for their parents (Barmy Bethlehem most recently), Year 2 and 3 work together for their performace (Sing! most recently) and Years 4, 5 and 6 go to Tiverton Baptist Church (St Peter's church, this year) to perform to their parents.
It's always a lovely, but very busy, time!
As well as the Christmas productions across the school, Year One always perform 'Commotion in the Ocean' for their parents at the end of the year as well as Year Six putting on their end of year production. Recent performances have included Bugsy, Cinderella Rockerfella and this year, The Wizard of Oz! The skills the children learn whilst doing these are incredible.
Starting in September 2025, focusing on our value of 'aspiration', we will be taking part in a programme run by DCC called 'Start Small; Dream Big'. This will encourage all of our children to think about different careers open to them, how they might reach their aspirations and breaking down prejudices and misconceptions about job roles. We will also be inviting visitors into school to talk about their careers to the children.
We have a range of roles for the children to take part in and have some whole school responsibility. These include school councillors, house captains, play leaders, assembly leaders, librarians, mental health ambassadors and more! Often, the role of democracry comes into these roles as they are voted on by the children.
In 2023/24, our Year Four children spent a night away at Rock and Rapids in South Molton. Here, they learnt rock climbing, bouldering, archery, high ropes, fire lighting and more!
Also in 23/24, our Year Fives spent two nights at the Dartmoor Activity Centre. They took part in lots of different activities such as weaselling, land rafting, orienteering, den building and more!
Finally, our Year Six pupils spent four nights on the Isle Of Wight, travelling to lots of different sights including the Needles, a zoo, a theme park, a castle and lots more in-between!
These residential visits are a wonderful experience for the children who learn independence, but also team work, confidence, self esteem and more!
In 2024/25 our year 4s and 5s will be visiting the Dartmoor centre while our year 6s once again return to the Isle of Wight.
Our eco-team, set up this year with the help of Mr Viney has been working hard to reduce the waste we create, recycle more and make sure we use the correct bins for different rubbish types. They will continue this work next year.
We are lucky to have a really well stocked and resourced library for all of our children to use. We have a range of fiction and non-fiction books that are linked to our topics. We are also part of the Devon Library Scheme which means all of our books come linked to the Accelerated Reader Levels of the children so they can pick correct books for the level they are reading at. The books are also regularly changed and updated by the library service.
We are so lucky to have extensive outdoor spaces, including a forest school. And, in Mrs Jennings, a trained forest school leader on site! All of our children in Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 receive weekly forest school sessions as part of their planned weekly timetable. These sessions are often linked to the topics the chidlren are learning about in other subjects.

Everything 'extra' that we do, as talked about above, is to give our children experiences that they would not normally get. This is with the goal of improving their cultural capital, creating active, responsible members of the local and wider communities, gaining an understanding of the impact they can have and achieving and showing our school values: aspiration, respect, happiness, kindness, integrity and perseverance - showing that it is not just in 'normal' curriculum lessons that we can show and be these things.
We also, simply, want school to be a fun, safe place for our children - a place they love coming to and are eager to come into school everyday because of the experiences they will receive.
