"Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation." National Curriculum For Art and Design
We have designed our art curriculum from scratch, allowing us to make sure the skills and knowledge that the children are taught progress year on year, across the whole school. We have also ensured the children will learn about a wide variety of artists from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. Most importantly, we have designed the curriculum for the children to experience as many different types of art as possible, and to have fun whilst doing so!
The children take great pride in their sketch books and we are looking forward to starting our yearly art exhibition for parents!

Two Moors Primary School's Art and Design curriculum aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art, while critically examining famous works of art from artists all over the world. Our scheme is written by our subject leaders and other senior leaders and designed to give all pupils, regardless of their level or need, every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Our curriculum supports pupils to meet the National Curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and has been written by us, for our children. Here are some of our other aims:
Children will enjoy art and design and develop a love and interest of the subject
Children will be given the opportunity to express and develop their creativity
Children will be given the opportunity to develop their artistic skills
Children will be given the opportunity to explore art using a range of different media
Children will be given the opportunity to develop a knowledge of famous artists
Children will develop an appreciated of different types of art through history
Children will learn to think critically and form their own opinions about different types of art
Teachers will enjoy delivering the art curriculum
Teachers and children will understand how art can be used therapeutically and to support mental health
Children will be ready to continue their ‘artistic journey’ through later school and life.
Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organised into six core areas: painting, sculpture, drawing, collage, printing, textiles, digital media
Here is how we will implement our curriculum across the school:
Each year is started with a self portrait – a different style in every year group
Art and Design is taught throughout the year – at least 3 lessons per half term
Sketch books are used from Yr 1 upwards; these will continue with the children through their time in school
Sketch books will be used for practising skills and 'getting better' at art
Practical Knowledge is taught and developed progressively throughout each year group
Theoretical Knowledge of artists is developed through each year group
Disciplinary Knowledge is taught to develop children's critical thinking about art
Vocabulary of art is explicity taught – key vocabulary will be stuck in books
Formal elements of art (hexagon work) will completed at the start of every year
Front covers for each unit of work will be stuck into sketch books with the knowledge and skills that the children will learn in the lessons
At least one famous artist is linked to each unit of work to develop the children's theoretical and disciplinary knowledge
Teacher modelling will help support pupils wherever possible
Art displays throughout each key stage will show and highlight good examples/progression throughout the year
Each unit builds towards a ‘final piece’ which will be used as a summative assessment opportunity
Each unit and lesson will have recaps/revision/flashbacks to help children 'remember more'.
Group/class collaborative projects will be used where appropriate
Positive peer and self evaluations will be used throughout units of work, scaffolded where appropriate
Teacher assessment will be ongoing throughout the unit based on the skills and knowledge learnt throughout
Visiting artists will be used to enhance the curriculum
Art clubs are run by teachers throughout the year
We will put on an end of year art exhibition
Moderation across years and between year groups will be used to ensure progression and accuracy of teacher assessments
Children with SEND are supported with appropriate adaptations, but not necessarily differentiated work
More able artists are challenged through both disciplinary knowledge challenge questions as well as challenging themselves through substantive knowledge and skills
Our art curriculum is designed in such a way that children are involved in evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their outcomes and the improvements they need to make. By taking part in our regular discussions and decision making processes, children will not only know facts and key information about art, but they will be able to talk confidently about their own learning journey, have higher metacognitive skills and have a growing understanding of how to improve.
The impact of our scheme can be monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. Each lesson will include opportunities for teachers to assess pupils against the learning objectives.
By reaching our curriculum end points, pupils should leave Two Moors Primary School equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
The impact of following our art curriculum is that children will:
★ Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences
★ Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, textile, digital media and printing
★ Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
★ Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
★ Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for Art and design.
