Knysna Heads

The lagoon side of the Heads is suitable for snorkelling and exploring tidal pools. However, swimming into the main channel between the Heads is dangerous due to powerful currents and is not advised.

Coney Glen – Eastern Head

Tucked below the Eastern Head cliffs, Coney Glen is popular for rock fishing, BBQs, and picnics. BBQ facilities and a rugged shoreline make it ideal for a relaxed afternoon by the sea.

Bollard Bay – Leisure Isle

A calm, family-friendly beach perfect for young children. There are no large waves, just plenty of shallow water for splashing and playing. At low tide, you can explore tidal pools, build sandcastles, and enjoy long beach walks.

Brenton-on-Sea

Located about 15 km west of Knysna, this pristine, undeveloped beach is ideal for walking, sunbathing, and soaking up the peaceful surroundings. It’s also popular with paragliders.

Cola Beach – Sedgefield

A quiet, scenic beach known for long, relaxing walks and spectacular sunsets. After your walk, enjoy a meal or sundowner at Pili Pili restaurant just a short drive away.

Buffalo Bay (Buffelsbaai)

This safe, Blue Flag beach is a favourite for walking, surfing, and fishing. It stretches all the way to Brenton-on-Sea and has nearby facilities including showers, toilets, a shop, and a beachfront restaurant.

Noetzie Beach

A hidden gem accessible via a steep path, Noetzie is famous for its stone “castles” and quiet beauty. The river forms a picturesque lagoon before reaching the sea. Due to strong currents and rocks, swimming is not allowed.

Keurboomstrand – Plettenberg Bay

This expansive and unspoilt beach lies next to a private coastal nature reserve and is surrounded by indigenous fynbos and forest. It’s a peaceful spot for walking and relaxing in nature.

Garden Route National Park – Knysna Section 

This stunning coastal park includes the Knysna Forest and surrounding lakes and estuaries. Managed by SANParks, it offers hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, bird-watching (including the rare Knysna seahorse and the Big Tree), and scenic picnic areas.

Goukamma Nature Reserve & Marine Protected Area  

Located between Knysna and Sedgefield, Goukamma features coastal dunes, unspoiled forest, river estuary, Groenvlei Lake, and beaches. Wildlife includes vervet monkeys, bushbuck, grysbok, porcupine and over 220 bird species. Visitors can canoe, swim, fish, and hike on various trails. Entry fees apply (approx. Featherbed Nature Reserve  

Situated on the western Knysna Heads, this privately conserved reserve includes a ferry ride across the lagoon, optional guided forest walks, or a 4×4 ride plus ancient sea caves. Suitable for all ages with spectacular views and coastal forest exploration. Ferry departures from waterfront.

Pledge Nature Reserve  

A small, 10‑hectare nature reserve in central Knysna, featuring meandering forest trails, streams, ponds, and fantastic views over Knysna Heads from its highest viewpoint. Robberg Nature Reserve – Plettenberg Bay  

A proclaimed national monument on a rocky peninsula offering dramatic coastal hiking trails (8 km circular route), superb sea views, fossil-bearing cliffs and opportunities to spot Cape fur seals, dolphins, and even whales along the shoreline. Historical shipwreck sites include the SS Kakapo.

Dalene Matthee Big Tree & Circles in a Forest Trail

Krisjan-se-Nek picnic site, Millwood/Gold Fields Forest, Knysna  

Home to the massive 880‑year‑old Outeniqua Yellowwood known as the “Big Tree,” this site also serves as the trailhead for the Circles in a Forest day walks. Choose a 3 km or 9 km route through indigenous forest along historic gold-mine footpaths, across babbling streams, and past tree ferns. There is a memorial stone dedicated to author Dalene Matthee nearby.

Garden of Eden Walk  

Harkerville Forest, N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay  

A peaceful, accessible loop of wooden boardwalks (approximately 800 m). Ideal for picnics, elderly visitors, or young children. Facilities include benches, picnic tables, restrooms, and drinking water at the entrance kiosk.

Jubilee Creek Walk & Picnic Site  

Millwood Goldfields area, Knysna Forest  

An easy 3.6 km return hike along the Outeniqua Hiking Trail through indigenous forest, crossing Jubilee Creek several times before reaching a beautiful swimming pool beneath a small waterfall. Popular picnic tables and basic toilets are available on site. Permits required at the Bibby’s Hoek entrance.

Goudveld Forest, near Millwood/Krisjan-se-Nek  

A short but steep 3.6 km route descending to the Homtini River, with viewpoints over forest canopy and a cold swimming hole at the river. Ideal for adventurous walkers. Wear proper shoes, take snacks, and bring swimwear in summer.

Elephant Walk – Diepwalle Area  

Diepwalle picnic site, Knysna Forest  

A longer network of trails including feeder segments of the Elephant Walk, passing the ancient Outeniqua Yellowwood at Diepwalle and leading to a serene forest swimming rock pool. You can choose 3 shorter circular loops or walk the full route based on time and fitness.

Diepwalle Big Tree (King Edward VII / Outeniqua Yellowwood)  

Diepwalle Forest Station, Garden Route National Park, Knysna  

Visit one of the oldest and largest Outeniqua Yellowwood trees—estimated to be 600–800 years old and approximately 37 m tall with a 35 m canopy. A wheelchair- and pram-friendly boardwalk leads through indigenous forest to the majestic tree. Nearby, explore the Forest Legends Museum and Diepwalle Tea Garden at the SANParks station.

This small museum tells the story of Knysna’s historic woodcutters, elephant heritage, and forest life. It includes a mounted skeleton of the legendary Knysna Elephant and vintage forestry artifacts.

From May to December, humpback and southern right whales are frequently seen off the Garden Route coast. Dolphins are present year-round and seals are also commonly spotted near shore.

Harkerville Coastal Trail  

Located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the Garden Route National Park, this rugged 2-day trail follows coastal cliffs and ancient indigenous forest. Expect challenges like ladders, chains, and narrow wooden stairs with sudden drops — stunning but not for the faint-hearted. Bookings are handled by SANParks; community forestry staff oversee trail access.

Otter Trail  

South Africa’s most iconic 5-day/4-night coastal hike stretches approximately 44 km from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley. Hikers traverse pristine beaches, hidden coves, gallery forest, fynbos slopes, and multiple river crossings. Overnighting in SANParks huts, the trail is physically demanding and requires advance booking via SANParks.

A challenging 7-day (approximately 108 km) forest-to-forest route running between Diepwalle (Knysna) and Beervlei within the Garden Route National Park. Lake Pleasant – near Knysna

One of South Africa’s premier bass fishing venues, Lake Pleasant offers year-round angling. The best months are typically October to November and January to May. Both trolling and casting are effective here. Charter boats are also available for those interested in reef fishing.

East of The Heads

Flat rocky outcrops on the seaward side of the Eastern Head are popular spots to fish for Elf (Shad), White Musselcracker, and White Steenbras. These rocks allow anglers to cast into the deep channel where the lagoon meets the ocean.

Mouth of the Noetzie River

Located about 5 km east of Knysna, the Noetzie River mouth and bay are known for producing good catches of Cob and White Steenbras. On either side of the bay, deep-water gullies are home to Galjoen (especially in winter), Blacktail, and Zebra. Elf, Leervis, Cob, and White Musselcracker can be caught from the deeper areas.

The Knysna Lagoon

A favourite among local anglers, the lagoon is especially known for Spotted Grunter. Other species frequently caught include Cob, White Steenbras, Stumpnose, and Leervis. The calm waters make it ideal for both shore and boat fishing.

Birds of Eden

Adjacent to Monkeyland, Birds of Eden is the world’s largest free-flight aviary. It spans a lush indigenous forest with waterfalls, elevated walkways, and over 220 bird species flying freely in a massive dome.

Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary

Woodbourne Pan – Leisure Isle

Located opposite the Leisure Isle causeway on George Rex Drive, this serene pan attracts a wide range of birdlife depending on the tides and seasons. Common sightings include Cape and Hottentot Teal, Egyptian Geese, Herons, Sacred Ibis, Hadeda, Spoonbills, Rails, Ruffs, and Curlews. A must-visit for waterfowl and wader enthusiasts.

Upper Langvlei & Rondevlei – Wilderness Lakes District

Part of the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park, these protected wetlands are a haven for birdlife. Of South Africa’s 95 waterfowl species, 75 can be spotted here. Look out for Spur-winged Geese, African Fish Eagles, Coots, Ospreys, and the elusive Narina Trogon. Bird hides and walking trails make it easy to observe them.

Goukamma Nature Reserve

This coastal reserve supports a variety of birdlife. Endangered African Black Oystercatchers nest along the beaches, while Kingfishers and Fish Eagles frequent the rivers. A fantastic spot for spotting both coastal and woodland species.

These areas provide excellent forest and valley birding opportunities. Keep your eyes open for the Knysna Loerie (Turaco), Hoopoes, Woodpeckers, Canaries, Shrikes, White-eyes, and the very rare Knysna Warbler — one of South Africa’s most elusive birds.

Kranshoek – Harkerville

This scenic cliff and forest-edge area is rich in fynbos-endemic birds. Species often seen include Orange-breasted Sunbirds, Cape Sugarbirds, and Seedeaters. The surrounding cliffs and coastal forest create a diverse and rewarding birding environment.

Garden Route Birding – Ben Fouché (Guided Birding Tours)

A relaxed and rewarding birding experience led by knowledgeable local birder Ben Fouché. Explore the wetlands and forests of the Wilderness and Sedgefield area, with stops at bird hides and forest trails. Prince Alfred’s Pass

One of South Africa’s most picturesque mountain passes, this winding dirt road was engineered by Thomas Bain in the 1860s. Starting from the R339 turn-off just outside Knysna, it winds through the Diepwalle indigenous forest, past the iconic Big Tree, over rugged mountains, and into the serene Valley of Ferns. Look out for the Spitzkop viewpoint for breathtaking panoramic views. The road eventually leads to Outeniqua Trout Lodge, where day visitors are welcome by prior arrangement for trout fishing.

The Seven Passes Route

This historic route was the original road between Knysna and George and spans seven passes that twist through indigenous forest, farmland, and along river gorges. Highlights include ancient stone bridges, dense forest canopies, and the opportunity to explore the gold mining history at Millwood. It’s a slow, meandering drive full of character and natural beauty. Perfect for a scenic day trip with multiple picnic stops.

Jubilee Creek and Millwood Gold Mines

Tucked deep in the Knysna forest are the relics of the 1880s gold rush. Explore the ruins of Millwood’s ghost town, its old mine shafts, rusted equipment, and the Monk’s Store, which displays fascinating memorabilia from that era. There are two well-marked walking trails: a circular forest walk from Millwood, and a creek-side trail from Jubilee Creek, an enchanting picnic and BBQ site along the stream where alluvial gold was once panned.

To reach the area, take the Rheenendal turn-off from the N2 (7 km west of Knysna). After passing through Rheenendal, follow the Goudveld Forest dirt road for 13 km. Register at the entrance gate and continue another 5 km through thick forest to reach either Jubilee Creek or Millwood.
