Lagoon & Tides

The Knysna Lagoon is actually an estuary, where the Knysna River meets the sea through the narrow opening between the Knysna Heads.

The tide changes the lagoon throughout the day, and you may notice a very different view from the beach just a few hours apart.

HIGH TIDE & LOW TIDE

At high tide, the water comes further up the beach and there is more water over the shallows and sandbanks.

At low tide, more sand is exposed and the shallows extend further out. Around Knysna, channels and sandbanks that are hidden at high tide can become clearly visible as the water drops.

This changing landscape is part of the character of staying beside the lagoon, whether you are walking along the sand, watching the birdlife or simply enjoying the view.

ON THE WATER

The tide also affects the strength and direction of the current.

If you are kayaking or paddleboarding, check the tide, wind and weather before setting out. Stay well away from the Knysna Heads and the main entrance channel, particularly when the tide is flowing out towards the sea. Currents closer to the Heads can be strong even when the lagoon appears calm.
