For Students
THRIVE’s Student Community of Practice is a place to foster leadership skills while helping to create inclusive STEM cultures right where you work, study, and play.
“THRIVE is a program that allowed me to know that my voice as a New Majority student mattered.
I was able to work alongside other new majority students and professors to create suggestions in place to help assist learning in the classroom and other environments on campus.
I am grateful for the opportunity and hope that more efforts will be made to make the classroom more inclusive for all students.”
- Gbemisola Fadeyi

What You Need to Know Before Applying
THRIVE Student Community (TSC) consists of change agents at MIZZOU. The TSC exists to surface critical concerns and barriers experienced by New Majority students in STEM, to emphasize belonging and equity, to provide psychologically safe space for students in STEM to process concerns and hold productive campus dialogues. The TSC collectively amplifies voices of student advisers and leaders who are tasked with co-creating culture change alongside faculty and administrators—on matters of equity, inclusive practices, and belonging for New Majority students in STEM. Leaders of the student community represent MU THRIVE at regional and national events.
In Year 3, we focused on curating knowledge developed by various students across campus, over the past two years, regarding their experiences as a New Majority student in STEM at MU. Student participants organized two different “How to Guides,” one specific for students and the other faculty:
The student guide highlights “How to Thrive at Mizzou as a New Majority Student in STEM.” This guide includes resources, navigational tips, and a collection of stories that outline different student experiences.
The faculty guide focuses on supporting, teaching, and mentoring New Majority students in STEM. This guide provides information about New Majority student experiences, needs, as well as suggestions for how to improve their teaching and mentoring to best support New Majority students.
In Years 1-2, we focused on peer mentoring. Working with 50 undergraduates, the full team met regularly to discuss their perspectives on inclusion within STEM as well as to plan student-led inclusive excellence projects. Graduate students gained mentoring skills, during our interactive events:

“We really wanted to help students discover the power they maintained to foster change. Our jobs were to provide the resources, scaffolding, and platform.”
-Dr. Terrell Morton, Co-PI
