When the student comes in, he/she is asked to fill out the registration form. This form records the student’s basic information (e.g., name, address, family information, languages spoken, country of origin, English learning history, and reason for wanting to learn English). This form also helps site leaders determine whether the student needs childcare or transportation.
Students are also given a placement test. In this test, students are asked to read and write some words or sentences. The answers to these questions are used to determine what English level would suit them best.
After placement test, the student is assigned to a class and introduced to his/her teacher.
If childcare is needed—and if childcare is available at the ESL site—the student will be shown to the room for childcare where children will be cared for until the conclusion of the class. This allows students to focus completely on learning English without the competing concern of caring for their children.
The student's photo will be taken, not for sharing abroad, but to aid volunteers in becoming better acquainted with their students.
Though a course fee is not mandatory, there are good reasons for asking students to pay a small fee each semester. First, a course fee helps to pay for instructional materials that are used in the course. Second, a small personal investment allows students to recognize the value of the instruction and materials they’re receiving. This fee can be mentioned on day one but can be collected anytime in the semester.
