The Impeachment of Sara Duterte
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In recent weeks, the political setting in the Philippines has been disturbed by calls for the impeachment of Sarah Duterte, the current Vice President and eldest daughter of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. While it is crucial in any democracy to hold leaders accountable for their actions, the movement to impeach Sarah, in my view, lacks the important reason required for such a harsh action. It raises basic questions about fairness, due process, and the potential for political motivations overpowering the value of the allegations against her. Rather than pursuing impeachment, we should focus on effective communication and collaboration for the nationaIs betterment.
To analyze the situation, we must first understand the context surrounding Sarah Duterte's political journey. As a prominent figure in a country struggles with numerous challenges such as economic difficulties, social issues, and the pandemic recovery. She has chose for a leadership style that prioritizes direct engagement with the public. While her approach may be controversial, it is essential to recognize that leadership styles within
democracy are personal. The very foundation of democratic governance thrives on the diversity in leadership methods, all of which should be respected unless clear corruption is evident. The recent push for impeachment seems inspired more by political rivalry than by legitimate concerns regarding her competence. This political scheming under mines the purity of our democratic processes. Impeachment is not a tool for settling political scores but rather a measure reserved for instances of grave misconduct or failure to fulfill duties. Using it in the
current climate risks setting a dangerous example where protect and rivalry could overthrow a leader without solid grounds.
In conclusion, the calls for Sarah Duterte's impeachment evoke a sense of urgency to defend not just her political standing, but the principle that leaders deserve fair treatment, free from political pressures. While no leader is above examine, it is crucial to ensure that the pursuit of accountability does not devolve into opportunism. Emphasizing dialogue over division should be the priority. By fostering a healthier political discourse, we may not only strengthen our democracy but also build a more united, cooperative society. Instead of focusing our energies on impeachment, we should bring powerful conversations that can lead to real and lasting change for the Philippines. The future should not be prohibited by political crocodiles but instead focus on the greater good of our nation.

The Tragic Death of Sophia Marie G. Coquilla
By: Angel Hope Napuli
On July 9, 2025, the heart-wrenching story of Sophia Marie G. Coquillahas spread across our screens, thrusting into the spotlight the pressing issue of Juvenile Justice in the Philippines. Sophia, a bright and promising young girl, fell victim to a crime that not only robbed her for her life but also shown the systematic flaws within our justice system, particularly in the treatment of minors under current laws. As we reflect on her tragic death, it serves as a powerful reminder that the time for justice reform is now.
Sophia's story is painful for us Filipinos. At the age of 19, she was the symbol of youthful energy, with dreams and aspirations cut short in a brutal act of violence. Her story resonates with countless families who have experienced overwhelming loss. Yet Sophia's death has triggered a particularly urgent conversation around Republic Act 9344, also known as Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act. This law, designed to protect minors from the heavy hand of the Justice system, has increasingly come under analysis, raising questions about whether it properly senses the needs of society while ensuring the safety and dignity of its youth.
At the center of Republic Act 9344 is the principle that Juvenile should be treated as individuals capable of rehabilitation rather than simply as offenders. While this approach is essential for future generations, it must also ensure the protection of innocent lives. The tragic case of Sophia reveals a obvious gap in our system, a gap that if not bridged, can lead to further heartache. Legal protections should not shield dangerous behavior; instead, there must be a careful balance between compassion and public safety.
Consider, for example, cases where young suspects often with histories of abuse or neglect are treated with mercy to the point of endangering others. The government core responsibility is to enforce law that protect children and, at the same time, ensure the safety of communities. Sophia's death force us to reconsider how we view juvenile offenders and whether the framework of rehabilitation truly fulfills it's promise of public protection.
In engaging with Sophia's story, we must not forget the chain reaction of grief on her family and community. Every individual who suffers loss needs to feel the echo of their lived one in society, evoking sympathy, and action where it is most needed. The voices of these who new Sophia and greive for her should be at the forefront of our discussions about injust laws and necessary changes, especially when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us.
As we collectively mourn the life of Sophia Marie G. Coquilla, it is important to push for systematic change. This should include revisiting and revising the policies surrounding Juvenile
Justice while ensuring that safety, fairness, and compassion are at the forefront of our legal guidelines. We owe it to Sophia and countless others to build a society where no child's life is put out without the opportunity to seek justice and changes.
In refecting on the life of Sophia, let us remember her not just as a victim, but as a a symbol of change. Her legacy will be one that triggers the transformation we desperately need in our Justice system. Justice for Sophia demands more than accountability—it demands a collective commitment to building a safer, more just future, where every child, regardless of their background, has a fighting chance to live and thrive. As we think about the consequences of RA 9344, we are reminded that every child's life is priceless, requiring our utmost attention and care.

Banishing of Smartphones in Class
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In today's modern world, the presence of smartphones in classrooms is at high peak nowadays. As technology steps into every aspect of our lives, students are finding it increasingly tempting to use their phones during class time. I stand firmly on the side against phone usage in classrooms, and here's why.
First and foremost, the primary purpose of being in a classroom is to learn. When students have their phones out, their focus is often diverted away from the lesson at hand. The endless notifications, social media temptations, and games can easily capture attention, leading to a significant decrease in engagement and participation. It’s disheartening to see students more absorbed in their screens than in the rich conversations and insights offered by their teachers.
Moreover, using phones in class can lead to significant distractions, not only for the person using it, but also for fellow classmates. A buzzing phone or the glow of a screen can draw eyes and minds away from lectures or discussions of teachers. This distraction can create an atmosphere in which it becomes difficult for everyone to stay on track. By removing phones in the classroos, we foster an environment where students can focus themselves fully in their learning experience without the temptation of interruption.
In addition to distractions, there is also the issue of dependency that arises with excessive smartphone usage. Using phones encourages a mindset where quick answers are sought instead of engaging in critical thinking and problem-solving. While phones can be fantastic tools for research, over-reliance on them can poor creativity and independent thought. Students should learn to embrace challenges rather than seek immediate relief from them through technology. Classrooms should be spaces that cultivate these essential skills.
In conclusion, the decision to ban phones in the classroom should not be seen as negative but rather as a way to enhance the overall learning environment. It reinforces the importance of engagement, deepens social connections, improve critical thinking, and fosters self-discipline. Our classrooms should be sanctuaries of focus and interaction where students are encouraged to thrive in their educational journeys.

The Good Impact of Sleep Quality
By: Angel Hope Napuli
Let's be real, as students, we're often tempted to sacrifice sleep for the sake of getting good grades. We might think that pulling all-nighters and cramming for exams is the key to
success. But for me, here's the thing that sleep is just as important as studying. In fact, getting enough rest can actually help us learn and retain information better.
When we sleep, our brains are hard at work processing and strengthening memories. This means that a good night's sleep can improve our focus, creativity, and problem-solving skills and hell us improve our critical thinking, all essential for doing well in school. And it's not just about academics, sleep also plays a crucial role in our mental and emotional well-being. When we're well-rested, we're more resilient to stress, less prone to anxiety and depression, and better equipped to handle life's challenges.
So, instead of staying awake late at night, let's prioritize sleep and self-care. Let's recognize that our health and well-being are just as important as our grades. By getting enough rest and taking care of ourselves, we can perform better academically, enjoy better mental health, and live more fulfilling lives. It's time to rethink the idea that sacrificing sleep is necessary for success. Let's make sleep a priority and reap the benefits, both in and out of the classroom.

What is more important: Beauty or Brain?
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In today's world, the ongoing debate about whether beauty or brain holds more power is more prevalent than ever. While beauty may catch a person's attention at first glance, it's intellect and character that sustain meaningful relationships and inspire others. Beauty fades over time, but a sharp mind and deep understanding leave an incredible power impact that resonates throughout a person's life.
Choosing brains over beauty is an investment in oneself that extends beyond physical appearance. The ability to think critically, solve problems, and adapt to different situations is what empowers individuals to navigate life's challenges successfully. In conversations, it is often intellect that drives compelling discussions, leaving a lasting impression and forming connections that superficial attributes simply cannot replicate.
And last, society often underestimates the power of intelligence in fostering true beauty, which often lies within a person's personality and actions. A brilliant mind that embraces creativity and fosters innovation can spark joy and admiration far more than fleeting looks ever could. Ultimately, it's the depth of knowledge and wisdom that shapes our experiences, connecting us to others on a more meaningful level, and proving that brain truly outweighs beauty in the grand scheme of life.

The Other Side of choosing "Mahal Ako"
By: Angel Hope Napuli
When we find ourselves in the crossroad of love, the question often arises: should we choose someone we love or someone who loves us? This problem isn't just a matter of brain versus heart; it's a profound reflection of our emotional landscape and the desires that drive us. On one hand, the allure of being with someone we truly care for can be irresistible. It's a beautiful feeling to connect deeply with another person, to see the world through their eyes, and to share the intimate moments of life together. However, loving someone does not always guarantee that they can return that affection in the same way. This can lead us to experience heartache and longing for feelings that may not be reciprocated, ultimately leaving us feeling unfulfilled.
On the other hand, choosing to be with someone who loves us can feel like a safety net. There's a comfort in knowing that you are valued and cherished by someone who genuinely wishes to see you happy. This kind of relationship may offer stability and the warmth of mutual companionship, even if the spark isn't as intense. However, the question remains: can we truly be happy with someone if we don't feel the same way? It brings about reflections of compromise and sacrifice, as we might find ourselves grappling with feelings of guilt or apathy. It's essential to consider whether being loved by someone is enough to build a future together, or if we risk settling for a relationship devoid of that rejoice connection we crave.
After much reflection, I find myself leaning toward the latter—choosing those who love me. This decision isn't a rejection of love or passion; rather, it's an acknowledgment of the warmth, security, and support that come with being genuinely loved by another. There is a unique comfort in knowing someone cares for you unconditionally, seeing you for who you are, who accept your flaws, quirks, and all and still choosing to stand by you. This kind of love not only nurtures the soul but also acts as a strong foundation on which to build meaningful connections.
When I think about the implications of being loved versus loving someone, I realize that being on the receiving end of affection fosters a sense of belonging that is essential in our fast- paced lives. It provides a refuge from the chaos and uncertainty we experience daily. Those who love me offer a steady hand, a listening ear, and a kind smile just when I need it most. This connection is a gentle reminder that I am valued, that my existence holds meaning, and that I am worthy of care. Often, it is easy to overlook this love when we are caught up in the thrill of pursuing someone we adore. However, recognizing the love that surrounds us can transform our outlook, promoting gratitude and appreciation for the relationships we hold dear.
Choosing to embrace those who love me doesn't mean I disregard the beautiful complexities of romantic love. Instead, it prompts me to understand the importance of human connection more deeply. When I love someone, it often comes with expectations, hopes, and the desire for reciprocation. While this can be rejoicing, it can also lead to heartache when those feelings aren't mutual. On the other hand, choosing to revel in the love bestowed upon me allows me to experience a different kind of freedom—one that is enriched by trust and acceptance. In this nurturing space, I can cultivate self-love and emotional well-being, which in turn empowers me to share that love more genuinely with others. Ultimately, the choice of "Mahal Ako" opens the door to a lifetime of enriching bonds, fostering joy, and a profound understanding of what it means to be truly loved.

Exploring the Unknown
By: Angel Hope Napuli
Is science really that important?
Yesterday, October 2, 2025, Saint Thomas Aquinas College came alive with excitement as it hosted its much-awaited SciMath Event — a celebration of innovation, creativity, and intellect among Thomasians. With the theme “Harnessing the Unknown, Powering the Future Through Science Innovation,” the day was filled with inspiring performances, challenging contests, and impressive displays of students’ intelligence.
The event kicked off with the Grade 7 and 8 "Mathsayaw,” where students combined dance and mathematics in a creative display of rhythm and reasoning. They used their movements to illustrate mathematical concepts, making learning not just engaging but also fun. It was a refreshing reminder of how creativity can transform traditional subjects into something exciting and memorable.
Next came the “Shout Out” contest for Grades 9 and 10, where participants delivered powerful speeches centered on science, technology, and innovation. This contest was a perfect platform for the students to express their opinions and ideas on how science is shaping the future. The passion displayed by the speakers emphasized that the next generation is not only knowledgeable but also ready to influence positive change.
Meanwhile, Grade 11 and 12 students took the spotlight in the “Science Kit” challenge, where they were tasked to have a short comedy-drama about the doings of scientist before but make it their short version. Their projects demonstrated the incredible potential of hands-on learning and the power of creative thinking.
The final competition, the Extemporaneous Speech, featured one representative each from Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. It was an intense competition that highlighted the resourcefulness and critical thinking abilities of the participants.
However, some people might say, "Sure, these events are fun and all, but do they really prepare students for the challenges of real science?" While others might view the activities as more entertainment than education, but let's be real, it's hard to deny that these events get students excited about science and math. They spark curiosity and make learning feel more like an adventure than a chore. And isn't that what it's all about? getting young minds fired up about discovery and explorations in science and math.
In the end, the Scimath event at Saint Thomas Aquinas College was an outstanding success that brought together students from various grade levels to explore science and math in fun and innovative ways. From dancing mathletes to budding scientists, the event proved that education is not just about textbooks but also about creativity, passion, and the drive to explore the unknown.
It’s clear that events like these play an essential role in inspiring the next generation of thinkers, creators, and innovators

Scars of Betrayal
By: Angel Hope Napuli
As a Filipino, I'm sure you're as devastated as I am by the recent revelations of corruption in our country's flood control projects. We're a nation that knows the wrath of typhoons and extreme weather all too well. That's why it's so heartbreaking to see our leaders betray the public's trust and put lives at risk.
The investigation revealed shocking irregularities in the handling of funds meant for flood control projects. Instead of building infrastructure to protect us, corrupt officials siphoned off the money for their own gain. This isn't just about financial loss; it's about the lives of our families and communities that are put in harm's way.
Imagine living in a low-lying area, constantly fearing the next big flood. Imagine the anxiety and uncertainty that comes with knowing that our leaders are more interested in lining their pockets than in keeping us safe. This is the reality for many Filipinos, and it's unacceptable.
The consequences of corruption are far-reaching. It's not just about the financial cost; it's about the erosion of trust. When our leaders prioritize personal gain over public safety, it's hard to know who to trust. It's a painful reminder that we need to demand more from our government.
But I still have hope. I believe that together, we can create change. We can demand transparency and accountability from our leaders. We can support initiatives that prioritize our safety and well-being. We can be the voice for those who are affected by corruption and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Let's strive for a future where our leaders prioritize the people over personal gain. A future where our communities are safe, and our trust is restored. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our country to demand better.

The Inside Voices
By: Angel Hope Napuli
Abortion is a deeply emotional and polarizing topic that sparks intense debates. As someone who has thought deeply about this issue, I want to share my perspective on why I stand against abortion.
For me, it's not just about the medical procedure; it's about the potential life that is lost. When a child is conceived, they have their own unique DNA and potential. This realization makes me think about the value and rights of the unborn child.
I also think about the women who undergo abortions. While it may seem like a solution at the time, many women experience regret, guilt, and emotional distress after the procedure. Research shows that women who have abortions are more likely to struggle with depression, anxiety, and long-term psychological effects. These emotions don't just affect the individual; they impact families and communities.
As a society, we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable, including the unborn. We need to consider the ethical implications of abortion and how it affects our understanding of human rights.
In my opinion, the conversation around abortion can't be reduced to just "choice" or "bodily autonomy." It's about the potential life that's lost, the impact on women's mental health, and the kind of society we want to build.
I believe that we can create a more compassionate society that supports women and children. By providing alternatives to abortion and fostering a culture that values life, we can work towards a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

True Beauty
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In today's world, we're constantly bombarded with images of perfect bodies and flawless faces. Social media makes it easy to get caught up in the idea that looks are everything. But I believe that there's more to a person than just their physical appearance.
What truly makes someone beautiful is their inner qualities - their personality, values, and character. These are the things that make us who we are and shape our relationships with others. When we meet someone with a kind heart, a quick wit, and a positive attitude, we're drawn to them in a way that goes beyond physical appearance.
Think about the people in your life who you cherish the most. Is it because of their looks, or is it because of their kindness, empathy, and sense of humor? These are the qualities that make relationships meaningful and lasting.
Research shows that relationships built on emotional support and understanding are the most fulfilling. And in the workplace, it's not just about having the right skills - it's about being able to work well with others and having a positive attitude.
So, while physical appearance may grab our attention at first, it's the inner qualities that truly make someone beautiful. Let's focus on cultivating our inner strengths and supporting each other in being our best selves.

The Beauty We Should Value
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In today’s society, where images constantly flood social media and advertisements, many of us find ourselves caught in the web of external beauty standards. We are inundated with pictures of flawless skin, unrealistic body types, and glamorous lifestyles that invite unhealthy comparison. Amid these influences, it is essential to pause and ask ourselves: What truly defines beauty? Increasingly, it becomes clear that the most meaningful and lasting beauty does not come from physical appearance, but from the richness of one’s inner character.
Let us consider the qualities that genuinely define a person’s essence—kindness, empathy, resilience, and humor. These traits illuminate one’s true self and create a warmth that outward beauty can rarely match. When we connect with others beyond appearances, we build deeper and more meaningful relationships. The moments that stay with us are often rooted in shared laughter, acts of compassion, and mutual support during difficult times. These experiences forge stronger bonds than aesthetics ever could.
Moreover, the pressure to conform to society’s narrow beauty standards often fuels an unhealthy cycle, contributing to low self-esteem and mental health struggles. Focusing on inner beauty offers a refreshing alternative—one that promotes self-acceptance rather than constant comparison. When we value qualities such as honesty, generosity, and integrity in others, we are encouraged to cultivate these traits within ourselves. This shift not only strengthens our sense of self-worth but also nurtures a community built on substance rather than superficial ideals.
As we journey through life, we should challenge ourselves to recognize and nurture the inner beauty of those around us. It is this form of beauty that gives life depth and meaning. By embracing this perspective, we enrich our own lives and help foster a culture that values authenticity over artifice. In redefining beauty, we create a world where the heart and mind shine far brighter than any outward appearance ever could.

In the Future, Will Robots Replace Us Human?
By: Angel Hope Napuli
As we delve deeper into the digital age, discussions surrounding automation and artificial intelligence have become more pressing than ever. Rapid technological advancement brings promises of convenience and efficiency, but it also raises a critical question: Will robots eventually replace humans in various aspects of life? While the appeal of a high-tech future is undeniable, we must carefully consider the consequences of allowing this trend to progress without limits. An overreliance on technology may lead us toward a future where our very humanity is diminished.
The appeal of automation is often rooted in its efficiency—tasks that take humans hours can be completed by machines in mere seconds. However, this efficiency comes at a cost. When we begin to delegate significant responsibilities to robots, we risk losing not only jobs but also the essential skills, creativity, and critical thinking that define us as human beings. There is a unique spark of innovation and emotional intelligence inherent in human nature that machines, at present, cannot replicate. If we allow technology to take full control, we risk losing the qualities that make us truly irreplaceable.
Furthermore, we must acknowledge the dangers of excessive reliance on the internet and automated systems. Such dependence can widen the digital divide, leaving those without access to technology marginalized. It also exposes us to serious risks involving privacy, security, and personal autonomy. Imagine a future where our decisions are dictated by algorithms and our personal data is continuously monitored and analyzed. In such a world, human agency could slowly fade. This is why it is crucial to ensure that technology remains a tool that serves humanity—not one that controls it.
In conclusion, while the promise of an automated future is enticing, we must proceed with caution. Rather than embracing the idea of robots replacing humans, we should strive for a balanced approach where technology enhances human abilities instead of eliminating them. By aligning technological progress with core human values, we can enjoy innovation without sacrificing our identity. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to remain in control of our future—embracing technology as an ally, not an adversary.

The Call for Environmental Responsibility
By: Angel Hope Napuli
Cebu is grappling with a serious environmental crisis that has left many residents reeling. A tragic landslide of trash has not only scarred the beauty of our beloved land but has also resulted in the heartbreaking loss of lives. This devastating incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for education and awareness regarding proper waste management and environmental care. As communities come together in mourning, we must also unite in decisive action to ensure that such tragedies never happen again. It is time to critically evaluate our relationship with nature and the way we manage our waste.
The factors behind this disaster run deep. Rapid urbanization, inadequate waste disposal facilities, and a growing population have all contributed to the accumulation of trash in areas where it does not belong. As waste continues to pile up and overcrowded landfills become increasingly unstable, the risks grow more severe. This situation raises an important question: Are we truly prioritizing our environment and the safety of our communities? The issue goes beyond visible garbage—it reflects systemic failures in handling waste responsibly. This highlights the urgent need for education, not only on reducing waste but also on understanding the consequences of neglecting our environmental responsibilities.
Additionally, we must examine the role of businesses in this ongoing environmental struggle. Entrepreneurs should ask themselves critical questions: Is my business safe for this location? Am I contributing to the problem, or am I part of the solution? Sustainable practices must become a core element of every business model. By adopting responsible waste management systems and promoting eco-friendly practices, businesses can help transform a culture of neglect into one of stewardship. Change often begins at the local level, and responsible business practices can create positive ripple effects throughout communities.
This tragedy calls on each of us to reflect on our personal responsibility toward the environment. What happened in Cebu should not be seen merely as a disaster, but as an opportunity for growth, accountability, and awareness. We must advocate for proper waste disposal, educate ourselves and our families, and hold institutions and businesses accountable for their actions. Let this serve as a wake-up call—a collective call to action. Together, we can work toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for Cebu, where no community suffers from negligence and where our natural beauty is protected and preserved.

A Youth Increasing Crisis
By: Angel Hope Napuli
In recent years, the alarming rise in mental health issues among young people has become a pressing concern. Reports show an increase in depression and suicidal thoughts among teenagers and young adults, leaving families and communities searching for answers. This crisis is not merely a statistic—it reflects the struggles of real individuals: our friends, siblings, classmates, and students who face overwhelming pressures. The challenges of modern life, including the influence of social media, academic stress, and the lingering effects of the global pandemic, have created an environment where mental health struggles can grow unchecked.
As we reflect on this complex issue, it is crucial to approach it with empathy and understanding. Many young people feel isolated, believing they are alone in their pain. Creating an environment of openness and acceptance is essential—one where individuals feel safe expressing their emotions without fear of judgment or stigma. Schools, families, and communities share the responsibility of encouraging conversations about mental health and building support systems that allow young people to feel heard. Programs that promote mental wellness should emphasize resilience, self-awareness, and healthy coping mechanisms.
One promising approach is the organization of symposiums that address mental health in a meaningful and accessible way. These gatherings can provide safe spaces for young people to share their experiences, connect with mental health professionals, and learn about available resources. Through workshops, panel discussions, and peer support networks, we can foster an atmosphere of validation and understanding. More importantly, such initiatives can serve as a foundation for prevention and early intervention, highlighting the vital role of community support in addressing this crisis.
Together, we can confront the growing issue of depression and suicide among the youth by taking proactive and compassionate action. Awareness, education, and genuine care must guide our efforts. We must stand together to ease the silent burdens many young people carry and work toward a future where mental health support is accessible to all. By doing so, we not only respond to the challenges of today but also help build a healthier, stronger, and more resilient generation for tomorrow.
