The Hunted Ones
The Hunted Ones
The Hunted Ones are prey beasts, they are the food the Ignited wolves on Animus hunt to eat. They are an odd bunch, adapting to be also carnivorous in order to survive the harsh island when plants are lacking to eat, they can quickly go from hunted to hunter.
Reindyr
Large herds of Reindyr are a common sight. The herds are mixed, consisting of males, females, and their young. Their dull coloring helps them to blend in with one another, making individuals difficult to distinguish. Reindyr hooves have long hair that keep their extremities insulated while serving the dual purpose of making their tracks hard to identify. Their pseudo trunk regulates their temperature. Both genders have horns but females have a smaller nubby set.
Gangurru
Fast and flighty, Gangurru usually live in small family groups. They use their long tails to balance between being bipedal or four footed. This stance better gauges their surroundings by using their very large ears, eyes, and nose to observe herd-mates and watch for threats. Standing tall and charging while on their hind legs is utilized for intimidation. Females and young have more spots than mature males.
Hyllmunt
Hyllmunt are normally a solitary beast unless it's a mother, her sisters and her calves. Hyllmunts are capable of surviving and traveling for great distances with little to no food or water. These beasts are also capable of consuming foods that others cannot in abundance (or at all), including sea water. Twin humps on their backs store fats and other nutrients. Their saliva is heavily acidic which they use to assist in digesting food and for protection by spitting it at enemies to melt their skin.
Hross
Hross live in family units called mobs that consist of mothers and foals. They are accompanied by a breeding stallion that guards against predators and rival stallions that want to steal away their mares or mob. Hross stallions have very wide antlers that each feature a frontward spike. Mares grow a set of spike antlers and spar with each other for their position in the mob, securing the best survival chances for themselves and their foals. Hross are a smart and social beast, as well as a fast runner and amazing jumper.
Meoluk
Meoluk are one of the few beasts that have been semi-domesticated on the island. Shaggy, long hair covers the beast and protects the animal year-round when laying down to sleep and shields calves from cold. Both bulls and cows have horns. These cattle that have been tamed are highly valued for their hides, hair, horn, meat, and milk. No part of the animal is wasted.
Coney
Coney are excellent swimmers and are often seen in or near water. Prolific and docile, they can be deceptively simple creatures. Their fur is thick and waterproof thanks to natural oils. These animals are also insulated under their skin with thick pads of fat that render oil when heated over fire. This oil a valuable resource for medicinal purposes on the island, which, in addition to their tender meat, makes Coneys a prime hunting target.
Pinemart
Pinemart live in trees and are solitary. If running or climbing away from danger doesn't work, a Pinemart will arch its back in a threat display. Should its warning be ignored, it will attack with its quills. The quills' structure make them extremely painful or impossible to remove. When hunted successfully, these quills can become a valuable resource in medicine.
Eekhorn
Fast and tree dwelling, Eekhorn with its highly contrasting markings serve as a warning for a weapon that they use as a last resort. When threatened, it will stand on its front legs and raise its tail to spray a noxious, odoriferous musk at its attacker. Eekhorn seem to be aware of how hated their weapon is and will frequently take risks to steal resources from those more powerful than themselves and, just as often, succeed.
