Advice for those starting high school:
"I wished someone taught me how to properly take notes from Apex."
"If you need to ask for help, then ask for it. If you need to take a break, then take it. There's nothing to be ashamed of when you need one or both of these."
"Trust. In. God. Like no matter what challenges you face, trust that God has a plan for you and will guide you through difficult times. And also enjoy the journey, have fun, make close friends (that are from around the world cause you’re in CPA ;)) and take care of yourself… make sure to prioritize self-care and find healthy ways to manage stress."
"Focus on shaping yourself either spiritually and or physically"
"Study, even if it sucks. Work ahead even if it means not being able to watch that one YouTube video. Work to excel in school because not only does it show others around you they can excel but it also shows Christ (and gets you into college hah). Not only work hard but also learn to take breaks when you need to. If you work way too hard your first two years of high school, you'll be super burnt out, so find something other than school to channel your energy into (like sports, art lessons, something you find fun). But yah good luck >:)"
Pieces of wisdom for younger peers:
"As a senior you usually will have fewer classes and often easier ones too. DON'T SLACK OFF! With your extra free time, I highly recommend you start researching online for sources to look into colleges and scholarships if you plan to go to post-secondary education. If you haven't already, I highly suggest you make accounts on some of these websites that'll help you understand "reality" more and aid you in confirming which college you want to get into. These are some great resources I found in my experience of research."

"It's going to feel like a hurricane. Once you get through the chaos and confusion and into the storm's eye, there's going to be a whole other challenge waiting for you on the other side. Pray to God for guidance and perseverance through the tough times. Lean on your family and friends for support while you go through all the craziness. And keep moving. No matter bad the storm gets and how much you want to give up, keep moving forward and soldiering on."
"Honestly, don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether it's from teachers, classmates, or counselors, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. You’ll really thank your past self for it. And staying organized is very important too. Use planners, apps, or whatever works for you to keep track of tests, deadlines, and other tasks you have to do."
"As upcoming seniors you may have pressure, concerns, fears, etc. Just know that even though you may have these negative thoughts regarding your life, God has a plan for you and He will guide you. Just have faith in him. Fill out tons of scholarships throughout the year, like as many as possible, and then also make sure to complete college applications in the fall of your senior year. Most colleges' deadlines are in the winter or they stop awarding scholarships after the winter, so do it ahead of time LOL. (Also, you can email me if you need help filling these out I'm an expert now: (awithington15@gmail.com))."
Advice for those who are going to be seniors next year:
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." - Isaiah 40:31
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28
"The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth." - Psalm 145:18
"Keep up the good work. I am very aware that Apex may seem to offer unfair questions with impossible answers, but keep going. Work hard, don't get distracted by the things of this world, (like surfing the web and watching videos of no significance) and trust in the Lord God of Israel."
"We're allowed to make mistakes. There's no law against it; it's not illegal to mess up. It's learning from our mistakes that's the important part."
"Don't be afraid to dream big and set ambitious goals for yourself. With hard work and determination, anything is possible. Maybe one day you'll be the proud owner of a Baymax or a pet dragon. For younger peers, keep being your individual person, surround yourself with good people, and keep yourself in the path of God. :)"
"Uhm, don't build your personality on what others want, instead build it on who you want to be for the people in your life. A lot of the time we're like, "oh people like when I'm funny so I'm gonna be funny," or something, and even though it's good to laugh, it also lets you hide too much behind its cover. Learn how to let yourself feel. Let yourself go through hard times, let yourself show, and not letting other's opinions of you make you change your values. Oh, and also your parents are always right (usually). (I'm totally not being forced to say this)."
For the last installment of Calvary Comics for this school year, I asked Mae Lowery (winner of the CPA merch contest) to write about her design. Thank you so much Mae! <3
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Calvary Comics section this year! We will be needing a new person to overlook this section next school year. If you are interested, please contact Jacey at veltmanjacey@gmail.com
Have a wonderful summer!
When I was designing it, I really wanted to capture the essence of San Marcos, CA where Calvary Prep is based. It is right near San Diego in Southern California which is filled with beaches, palm trees, hot summers, marine life, etc. So I really wanted to share that Southern California essence with you all. I am also a huge fan of the beach, so I thought it would be cool to incorporate that into the design. I wanted to make sure the logo was super unique and included all the stuff I love, so I spent a lot of time playing around with different colors and tons of different designs! But overall I just wanted to say thank you, everyone, for liking my merch and voting for me. It is truly appreciated, and I am so grateful for you all!
