Often when people think of missionaries, they can sometimes think of people who go off to faraway countries that have never heard the gospel, thinking that the only people who have not heard of it are in desolate areas. Yet, this is not true. Many people in technologically advanced countries still need the gospel as well. This is none the more evident in the country of Japan. Japan is an industrial powerhouse that is known for its modern advancements yet, this country has a deep spiritual need, a need that the Risden Family recognized and came to help serve.

Here at CPA, we have people from all over. From India to Japan to the United States to Brazil, we are a diverse crowd. Today, we are here to learn about one of those groups: our Floridians. In the style of the Florida Man stories which have taken the internet by storm, you get to learn first-hand stories about the crazy things that happen in a normal Floridian’s life. I just want to say a brief thank you to all who responded, you are the people who make this newsletter great. Without further adieu, here are the CPA Florida Man Stories.

Florida Man Encounters an Iguana
First some background information. Iguanas are an invasive species, not native to Florida, but are known as pests. In fact, the government of Florida in 2018, was paying iguana hunters $5 to $6 per iguana. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also encourages landowners to kill them if they are seen on their property.
One of the respondents gave an exciting story about a wild iguana encounter. On a bright, normal Florida day, her dad spotted an iguana roaming around on their property. In response to how other people react when they find a rodent, he looked to get rid of it. Taking his gun in hand he chased after the iguana, firing shots at it. Eventually, the iguana took a hit, but it did not give up so easily. It ran into the pond on their property, hiding from its shooter. But, an unexpected third party decided to step in to remove the pest. An alligator, who, unknown to the family, was living in the pond, started to chase after the scrappy iguana, chasing it away from the land. Chomping at it, they swam out of sight. It is unknown to this day if the iguana has survived.
Florida Man Creates Redneck Amusement Ride After Hurricane
Florida is a hotspot for hurricanes. Located off the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, over 120 hurricanes have hit Florida over the last 150 years. Given that still, over 20 million people live there. With that many people, you are guaranteed to hear a good hurricane story from someone. Well, not exactly a hurricane story, one of our respondents shares an exciting moment after a hurricane.
As it is well known, some Florida people are a little crazy. Living under the constant threat of their houses being destroyed by hurricanes, being slightly crazy seems like a reasonable response. Not only do they have to deal with the hurricane, but the floods that fill the streets long after the hurricanes have left. In an act of defiance to the challenges that nature throws their way, our respondent tells of one way that Floridians show that they won’t leave. Taking their trucks and a few adventurous folks, they wade out into the water for some fun. They tie their inner-tubes, which are often used for recreational relaxing in pools or lakes, and tie them to their tow hitches. With the package secured, the willing will climb into the inner-tube for their ride. Once the customary phrase of: “Please, keep your hands and feet in the ride at all times” had been said, they were off, driving their trucks, pulling people in inner tubes behind them for a little bit of crazy Floridan fun.
Florida Man Almost Gets Left Behind.
One respondent, Jesse Kyle, told us of a fishing trip that went wrong in all the wrong ways. As an avid fisherman, Jesse spends a lot of time outside with his dad and brother fishing. On one particular day, they went to a new fishing spot when the first thing went wrong. As they left the shore and proceeded to go out, Jesse’s dad realized he left his phone back on shore. They proceeded to head back, but the current had other thoughts. The current kept them from coming in as they fish from a small boat with a tiny motor that was not powerful enough to go against such a current. Once they retrieved the forgotten item, they headed back out.
All was fine and was a nice, normal fishing day until the end when it took a turn for the worse. It became low tide and they were able to step out on the barnacles and get some last-minute fishing. When it was time to go, Jesse’s dad and brother got in the boat when his brother pulled up the anchor. The boat began to drift away from Jesse, threatening to leave him behind. Realizing this predicament, his dad told him to grab a hold of the rod. Reaching out, Jesse was only able to grab the tip before it snapped in half. Luckily Jesse was able to make it back in the boat, but not with the casualty of the broken rod. As they were heading home, Jesse’s brother’s rod got tangled in the mangroves they were driving through, and it became unusable. As they traveled along further, Jesse’s rod became tangled as well, worse than his brother, making his rod useless too. To make matters only worse, when they can see the shore at hand, the current moves against them, making the trip back to shore take over an hour. As Jesse describes it, “I think that was one of the worst fishing trips I have ever had!”

This section will do various activities in order to highlight our CPA Seniors to the community before we must say goodbye! For this month's edition, we will be doing some rapid fire questions with William Miyazaki, Rachel Risden, Grace Richards, Asa Dalton, and Elarena Whaley.
William Miyazaki
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same as today?
A: As a kid I always wanted to be a racecar driver. Although I'm (a teeny bit) more realistic now, I still think it would be an amazing job.
Q: What are you most excited about/looking forward to after you graduate?
A: Being able to travel on my own!
Q: What is your favorite memory from your time here at Calvary Preparatory Academy?
A: Every moment is a favorite memory at CPA. (I have a bad memory).
Q: What current fact about yourself would most impress your five year old self? Why?
A: That I haven't grown since then.
Q: What’s the most embarrassing Zoom moment you’ve had as a CPA student?
A: Screaming out "MR. BECK HAS A BEARD" in what I assumed was a private chat.
Q: If you could choose one current CPA event or club to live on forever, what would it be?
A: Tech Team.
Q: What is the most important lesson your time here at CPA has taught you?
A: It's okay if your pants are PJs, just make sure your tops look proper.
Q: What is one thing you want to tell your juniors before you leave the school?
A: There lived a certain man in CPA long ago (he was smart and chill and his eyes were black as heck).
Q: Has there been anyone, teacher or student, from CPA that has greatly impacted you? How so?
A: My teacher Mrs. White, without her I probably wouldn't have gotten this much involved in CPA.
Q: No question here, just a write in. This is your spotlight Seniors, give me one sentence that perfectly showcases how you want to be remembered :)
A: Nope, that one sentence is mine.
Grace Richards
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same as today?
A: Growing up, nothing seemed to catch my interest for long enough to want to make a life out of it. I was on the go ever since I could walk and never stuck to one activity for long! Now I plan on going into Ministry, and possible working with kids in other countries.
Q: What are you most excited about/looking forward to after you graduate?
A: Getting to hang out with all my amazing friends that I've been waiting years to see in person!
Q: What is your favorite memory from your time here at Calvary Preparatory Academy?
A: Oh I'm gonna have to go with watching William attempt to become a turtle for Game Night :]
Q: What current fact about yourself would most impress your five year old self? Why?
A: That I made it here so fast. At five years old my adulthood seemed ages away. But now it's approaching way too fast. I never imagined that I would feel that way when I was little haha!
Q: What’s the most embarrassing Zoom moment you’ve had as a CPA student?
A: Oh boy...11th grade, Escape Room Game Night. I arrived late and in a bad mood. I proceeded to Zoom direct message my friend about how this game seemed stupid and wasn't fun (For the record, after I learned how to play it was actually really fun, I was just being a bummer haha!). A few minutes after that DM, Mrs. White sent a message to everyone that if we weren't having fun we could feel free to leave. The pure fear I felt that night is honestly the most scared and embarrassed I have EVER been. To this day we wonder: Can Zoom hosts read private messages?
Q: If you could choose one current CPA event or club to live on forever, what would it be?
A: 100% Spirit Week/Month. I remember back in 10th grade I participated in Pajama Day for the first ever Spirit Week activity at CPA. It was the first time I really broke out of my comfort zone (even though I wouldn't really become involved until next year). It holds a special place in my heart!
Q: What is the most important lesson your time here at CPA has taught you?
A: That having friends is not a weakness, it's a strength. I always used to think the more you open up to people, the more you'll get hurt. CPA taught me that wasn't true and that sometimes in life, a good friend to have by your side can change your life.
Q: What is one thing you want to tell your juniors before you leave the school?
A: Go make a friend. Right now. Message someone you don't know. Make an effort to meet new people here. You'll never once regret it. Join a club. Go to an event. Surround yourself with the love this place has to offer.
Q: Has there been anyone, teacher or student, from CPA that has greatly impacted you? How so?
A: Practically everyone I've interacted with. My teacher Mrs. Witt stood by me for four years and it wasn't always easy (I can be a handful haha) but she's shown me so much love and support when I needed it most. My ASB teacher Mrs. White has inspired and encouraged me enormously over the past two years I've worked with her. She means the world to me and I wouldn't be the person I am today without her guidance and love. All of my friends, you guys know who you are, love y'all. But a shout-out to Richard Mutangi for being the first person to reach out to me when I first transferred here in the middle of 9th grade. I remember our soccer talks and while I was still very reserved and incompetent at that time, you made my move a little bit better.
Q: No question here, just a write in. This is your spotlight Seniors, give me one sentence that perfectly showcases how you want to be remembered :)
A: "Lose control, step on the gas. Burn a little brighter for as long as it lasts. Growing older happens fast. Nothing's gonna happen if you sit on your--"

Elarena Whaley
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same as today?
A: I wanted to be a famous singer as in I wrote my own songs and performed them. Now I want to be a famous singer in classical/musical pieces. So kinda the same.
Q: What are you most excited about/looking forward to after you graduate?
A: I'm excited to learn more about music and singer and to further my talent.
Q: What is your favorite memory from your time here at Calvary Preparatory Academy?
A: Honestly just being a part of the Leadership team, nothing specific.
Q: What current fact about yourself would most impress your five year old self? Why?
A: That I'm about to go to college for music, because it seemed so cool back then I guess.
Q: If you could choose one current CPA event or club to live on forever, what would it be?
A: Leadership Team
Q: What is the most important lesson your time here at CPA has taught you?
A: To be a part of the community and push yourself to do it.
Q: What is one thing you want to tell your juniors before you leave the school?
A: Be a part of the community, even if you're kind of on the fence about it, just do it.
Q: Has there been anyone, teacher or student, from CPA that has greatly impacted you? How so?
A: I really appreciate my teacher Dr. Van Wickle because he has given me so many chances and has worked with me through two long tough moves across the world.
Asa Dalton
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same as today?
A: I used to want to be a magician, and that's definitely changed. Now I'd say I'd like to be a professor.
Q: What current fact about yourself would most impress your five year old self? Why?
A: That I can juggle! Sometimes.
Q: If you could choose one current CPA event or club to live on forever, what would it be?
A: Probably the Talent Show. It's crazy what people are doing out there.
Rachel Risden
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same as today?
A: I wanted to be a mermaid and to be honest that would be cool but I've retired my dream of fins. I plan to be a teacher now HAHAH
Q: What are you most excited about/looking forward to after you graduate?
A: Probably just the change of scenery. College sounds super exciting!
Q: What is your favorite memory from your time here at Calvary Preparatory Academy?
A: This is actually a recent memory but the CPA Students for Life Club has been so awesome. I've gotten the chance to bond with my classmates on a much deeper level and it's been such a pleasure.
Q: What current fact about yourself would most impress your five year old self? Why?
A: The fact that I even made it this far HAHA. I dunno, I always sort of idolized "cool teenagers" when I was five, so I guess just the fact I am now one of them (not to toot my own horn) would impress my former kindergartener self.
Q: What’s the most embarrassing Zoom moment you’ve had as a CPA student?
A: Oh my goodness, I had to dance one time at game night for charades and no one got what I was acting out so I was stuck there dancing for way longer than I'd bargained for.
Q: If you could choose one current CPA event or club to live on forever, what would it be?
A: I would say the Symposium. It's still a pretty new thing here but the two times it has happened, it was super special and really impactful. Also the ASB Leadership Team because those are my homies.
Q: What is the most important lesson your time here at CPA has taught you?
A: I've learned the lesson of accountability time and time again. Before CPA I had been homeschooled without a whole lot of discipline so having teachers that weren't my parents to nudge me has been one of the greatest tools CPA has given me. In having other adult figures to keep me accountable, I like to think I've developed some of my own self-discipline.
Q: What is one thing you want to tell your juniors before you leave the school?
A: Junior year is HARD. I commend all of you juniors. My advice would be to draw out schedules for your assignments and make goals to finish things by certain times. Also if you plan to take the SAT, do your best to allocate a decent amount of time to study for that. One last thing, take some time to RELAX, or else you'll be burnt out by your senior year *cough* (like me).
Q: Has there been anyone, teacher or student, from CPA that has greatly impacted you? How so?
A: Aw man so many people. But I can't list them all so I'm gonna say my homeroom teacher Dr. Van Wickle and my ASB teacher Mrs. White. These two have been by my side since middle school/freshman year and have been so good to me. Dr. Van Wickle really takes his time to diligently explains things I don't understand along with being very supportive and gracious. I really don't think I would have made it through biology, algebra, and honestly high school all together without him! Then we have Mrs. White who does SO much for this school. She's really the glue that holds us all together. She loves her ASB kiddos and we love her too!
Q: No question here, just a write in. This is your spotlight Seniors, give me one sentence that perfectly showcases how you want to be remembered :)
A: To be honest I have no clue- I hope to be remembered as that one cool girl who was a half decent DD Patrol Officer.

Do you know the greatest gift you ever have received? Was it a toy, maybe some cash, or something awesome? Well, I know a gift giver that has given everyone a spiritual gift! That's right, the holy spirit has given you a spiritual gift. But this gift does not have a return policy, you will always be able to access it. But the devil can use sin to make it harder to use your gift. For example, Samson was a very strong man. He could do incredible things, but not by his ability. The Holy Spirit gave him a spiritual gift. But he let sin (dating a woman, not of God) make it harder to use his strength. You see, it was not God who took away Samson’s spiritual gift, it was his sin! Solomon was very wise but he let sin blind him. Just because someone has an amazing gift does not mean you can always use it effectively for God. Unfortunately, Samson and Solomon did not always use the spiritual gift they had. But God forgave Samson. Just like God will forgive you when we fall short.
What gifting or talents has God given you? Are you using your gifting or talents for God’s glory or have you been distracted by other things?
See the local side to our students' homes - Featuring - Lillian Heiligenberg
Hi! I’m Lilly and I live in Dubai. I moved here almost two years ago and so far am loving how diverse the city is. Though it is mainly an Arab country, there are pretty much people from every culture here, which means there are plenty of food choices. There are so many different things to do and see here, but keep in mind the traffic is insane.

It takes quite a while to get somewhere, especially during rush hour. However, that doesn’t mean the places aren’t worth seeing! If you do visit Dubai, make sure you visit one of its many malls. One of my favorites is the Dubai Mall where there are beautiful fountains that I never get tired of seeing. Also make sure you see the Old Souk, where you will learn firsthand how to negotiate the prices of the things you want to buy like various spices, gold, and other souvenirs. If you want a very touristic scenery, you should visit the main part of Dubai with all the high rises and glitz and glamor. One of the best things to do there is riding a dhow (boat) at the Marina, especially at sunset. But if you want a more authentic and realistic view of what it's like to live in Dubai, you should visit one of the less busy parts of Dubai, like where I live, Mirdif! I live in more of the suburbs of Dubai where there are less shiny buildings and it’s a bit older. I still visit the fancy parts of Dubai very often though. Another must for when visiting Dubai is taking a trip into the desert. You can either camp out there, ride a camel or horse, have a barbeque, or go off-roading! It’s very fun and I definitely recommend you try it!
On this week's episode of MissionCast, we have Laurrie St-Germain from the mission field of the Caribbean country, Haiti.
There seems to never be a dull moment in her life, as evidenced by the unconventional, Tom Cruise esque approach she explained in detail.
