How much would you pay to have a redo in your life? A chance to change something you regret, to have a fresh start. In a sense, that is what the Barnett family gets to do in Japan. Most people there have not heard about the church, so they get to be the ones to set the standard. Unlike in the United States, where there may be preconceived notions surrounding Christianity, Japan offers a fresh start for the missionaries to showcase what being a Christian truly means, which the Barnetts have faithfully been doing in Okinawa, Japan.

For being an online school, one may be surprised at how involved our community is. Last month, as you may know, our school hosted its third annual school-wide talent show. We had a fantastic turnout and got to see a wide range of talent from dancing to singing, to photography, to comedy, to instrumentals, and art. Our school is brimming with talent and we wanted to take the time here to recognize the winners who won the hearts of ours school community.
Our Grand Prize Winner of this Talent Show was Aaron Finch, who won the $250 grand prize. Aaron performed a percussive guitar version of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. Percussive guitar playing encompasses playing the guitar and hitting it; simultaneously playing both the melody and percussion part of the song. This can be quite tricky as you have to play each part together and in sync. If you want to see his performance, you can do so to the right. Aaron started his guitar journey about two and a half years ago, specifically started learning the percussion part only about a year ago. Before learning guitar, Aaron did not have much interest in learning to play any instrument, even though he was a music enthusiast. This changed when he heard Eddy van der Meer. This sparked his interest to play guitar and has been playing it ever since.

As many of you may know, preparing something for performance can take a lot of work. The talent show is no exception, when asked why he chose to submit to the talent show, Aaron pointed back to his teacher saying that she was the one that encouraged him to enter. In all honesty, Aaron admitted that he forgot about the contest until it happened and was surprised that he won. The time it took to prepare the piece he performed was quite a while. According to Aaron, it took a few days to learn the notes, about a week to be playable, and a month to perfect it. The hardest part of learning to play this piece was learning to play the melody and percussion together. It took a lot of practice and time to learn to play it by muscle memory. The reason Aaron chose this particular piece to perform was because it was one of his favorite songs to play on guitar plus it was enjoyable to play.
Playing guitar is currently a hobby for Aaron, but his current dream is to one day, God willing, make a career out of it. Although uncertain, Aaron is considering the possibility to make his own Christian music and to do that for a living. The advice that Aaron gives to those aspiring to pursue learning percussive guitar is to not take it slow. Some are taught to learn the basics first before learning more, but Aaron learned to play running before he learned to walk. When getting started on a piece like this Aaron says, “It can seem intimidating and kind of like black magic, but just try and it will eventually click.”

A: I actually wouldn't, because I'm satisfied with the talents God has given me, and I really enjoy doing them, so I'm really fine with just having the ability to sing about God, and His wonderful gift!
A: I would say gaming
A: Well I've really been singing ever since I could talk, "I'm always humming something" as my parents say, but I've been taking voice lessons for about 4 months now
A: I would say genuine
A: Playing guitar
A: I would say find a good teacher, practice, practice practice, and have fun with your song, cause your singing about Jesus!
A: Kaitlyn Dever
A: I am fond of the many talents I work on, but no, I would not turn back time to pursue a different one.
A: Making and producing music is my favorite pastime.
A: I have had my film-making talent for quite some time… I would like to say 8 years?
A: Storytelling
A: Probably producing music. Although there is no clear way to “perfect” it, there’s still so much I need to learn to improve.
A: Telling a story is worth every hour of work you put into it, if you’re being true to heart.
A: Myself. Just kidding. I would probably want Chris Pratt to act me. Even though we look nothing alike, I like him a lot.
A: Well, I'm always open to new experiences. I do not have a single skill or talent that I focus on. So, if I could turn back time, I'd keep the same initiative by pursuing the same skills and talents I currently have and love.
A: Other than the talent I displayed, my favorite pastimes would be reading, writing, and drawing.
A: I've been making music since I was young, but for the medium I used [DAW], it's been about 4 months.
A: Curiosity
A: If I could instantly perfect a certain talent, the talent of creative innovation in any field would be it.
A: Deliberate and focused practice and not too much research (tutorials) that would hinder you from taking action
A: Denzel Washington or Tom Cruise
A: I don’t think I would. Dancing is definitely what I’ve been called to do :)
A: Reading and crocheting!
A: I’ve technically been doing it since I was 5 (12 yrs.) but in all honestly I’ve probably been doing it since the womb
A: Fun
A: Dancing or crocheting
A: Always listen to the people who know more than you, they probably know what they’re talking about
A: I have absolutely no idea

Have you ever wondered who Jesus came to save? Was it the rich and the righteous? Or was it people who needed help and people who were lonely and needed a father? In Mark chapter 2, Jesus ate with "many tax collectors and sinners" Mark 2:15. In the time of Jesus, Jewish tradition recognized a meal as a time of intimacy, fellowship, and deep conversation. It signified full acceptance of the ones you were eating with. In the next verse, the Pharisees criticize Jesus. But Jesus told the Pharisees, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." In Mark chapter 2 Jesus is telling the Jews that he came for sinners, like you and me! Jesus came for people who needed help and people who needed to be saved from their sins. We have many examples of this. He healed people who the Jews wouldn't even touch. He forgave women and men who the Jews would have stoned to death. You see, Jesus humbled himself to be with people like us. So, you do not need to be rich, powerful, or a seemingly perfect Christian for Jesus to notice you, because He already does see you, and He will forgive your sins!
I encourage you to thank Jesus for saving sinners, and for living on this Earth and teaching us about redemption. Think about how loving He is and that He would dine with sinners!
